Star Wars Rebels has been an amazing addition to the new Star Wars canon. Not only has it given us a new group of heroes to follow, but it's also deepened the lore from the time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. We have already witnessed all of the countless Rebels references to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and been promised the re-appearance of Saw Gerrera in future episodes. On top of that, Rebels has brought in beloved characters from both the prequels and the original trilogy — to date, we have already seen Princess Leia, Grand Moff Tarkin, Darth Maul, Darth Vader, R2-D2, and C-3P0.

This season has also begun to weave in elements from The Clone Wars, with the inclusion of Sabine's Mandalorian back story, and her ties to The Dark Saber. We have traveled to Darth Maul's planet of Dathomir, and were even introduced to Grand Admiral Thrawn for the first time (in the new canon). However, one story line has intrigued fans more than any other, and it revolves around an old Jedi named Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Star Wars Rebels Season 3 Trailer

This season of Rebels has started to lay the ground work for bridging the gap between Episode III and Episode IV. Our band of heroes has joined what will become the Rebellion that we saw in A New Hope, and we know for a fact that some of the characters from Rebels were involved in the Battle of Scariff in Rogue One.

Watch the new mid-season trailer for 'Star Wars Rebels' below:

Adding to its impressive level of interconnectivity, Star Wars Rebels has been dropping hints about Obi-Wan Kenobi's arrival for a while. Judging by the mid-season trailer that recently dropped, it looks like Rebels is taking the leap, and we will actually see Obi-Wan on Tatooine in this season.

The Star Wars Rebels Season 3 mid-season trailer has so much to unpack, but one scene undoubtedly stole the show: that glimpse of Obi-Wan Kenobi in his "Old Ben" guise. Obi-Wan's appearance is not too surprising, since finding Obi-Wan seems to be the end game for both Ezra and Darth Maul. Although we don't see much of Obi-Wan in action in this trailer, it does confirm that Obi-Wan will play an active part in the climax of the season.

As you would expect, the picture above shows an Obi-Wan who looks more like Sir Alec Guinness than Ewan McGregor. 20 years have passed since Obi-Wan sent out the holocron that informed Jedi of what had happened to their ranks (at the end of Revenge of the Sith), and warned of the dark looming presence of the Empire. The years have not been kind to Obi-Wan; his aging between Episodes III and IV is dramatic, to say the least.

What really took me by surprise in this trailer was that it shows Obi-Wan's first confrontation with Maul since the Clone Wars. We knew that this was Maul's grand plan — to seek out Kenobi and kill him once and for all — but from what we have seen, it looks like Obi-Wan was ready for him.

Watch Darth Maul's act of revenge against Obi-Wan from The Clone Wars:

Don't forget, Obi-Wan is still mourning the loss of Duchess Satine Kryze, who died at the hands of Darth Maul. The fact that we know Obi-Wan survives this new confrontation with Maul does not bode well for our little buddy from Dathomir. Darth Maul might be walking into a fight he's not ready for — it certainly looks like Kenobi's been waiting for this moment.

Final Thoughts

Star Wars Rebels continues to impress, and gives Star Wars fan a feel for the new continuity. The Season 3 mid-season trailer promises so much more than the inclusion of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Sabine's story has become a focal point of this season — with some theorizing that she is connected to Obi-Wan in some way — and we will finally get a better look at Mandalore post-Clone Wars.

Rebels has managed to make the Sabine, Ezra, and Maul story lines uniquely interesting, while still being somewhat connected. One thing is for sure, We can't wait to see how Obi-Wan fits in to the world of Star Wars Rebels, and for what the future holds for our heroes. Star Wars Rebels will return on Saturday, January 7, at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT on Disney XD!
