Earlier today, the Disney Parks blog revealed upcoming exclusive merchandise for Episode 8: The Last Jedi, which will be sold later this year. Among the items they previewed were new t-shirts featuring familiar characters such as Finn, Poe and BB-8. But the most intriguing character on the new merchandise, without question, is #Rey.
Aside from Rey sporting a new 'do, which was revealed months ago on previews for Force Friday merchandise, we now have a good glimpse of her garb, which looks nearly identical to the Jedi robes of the prequels. Nearly every image that has been officially released of Rey for #TheLastJedi has shown her with lightsaber in hand and striking a fierce pose. This brings about the long debated discussion for the character moving forward: Will Rey be a Jedi?
After The Force Awakens was released, Rey quickly rose above the ranks to become one of the most beloved characters in the saga. Love for the character also brought about speculation as to what her ultimate end in the saga could be. Would she be the next savior of the galaxy? Would she turn to the dark side? Will she become a Jedi, Sith, or neither? All signs point to Rey being a noble and faithful servant of the light side. After all, she is on the sure road of the hero's journey by refusing destiny at first, and then rising above it after it has been put on her.
It would be a good bet that Rey will turn out to be the Jedi fans are hoping for. She will be under the tutelage of Luke Skywalker himself in Episode 8, and while Luke may have failed with his training of Ben Skywalker/Kylo Ren, it's unlikely he will make the same mistake twice. Going back to Anakin Skywalker, there were clear signs of anger and temptation during his time as a Jedi, but with Rey there have been no clear signs that she will follow that direction (at least not yet).
Let's play Sith's advocate.
While many fans may be convinced that Rey will be the light side savior of the galaxy, could writers shock audiences by turning Rey to the dark side? While this would seem like blasphemy to some, it would offer a rather interesting story that is reminiscent of Anakin Skywalker's journey. Anakin's story would be even more relevant to Rey if she turns out to be a Skywalker herself. Taking the dark side route with Rey would offer a clear path to a future saga continuation to resolve her story. However, it could be a little too reminiscent of the past trilogies. Ultimately, The Last Jedi will reveal a lot more of what we fans can expect from Rey's journey in the force.
The Last Jedi is scheduled for release on December 15.
Do you think Rey will become a Jedi or will she turn to the dark side?
