We've been waiting a long time to learn more about the growing mystery that is Rey, the young Jedi apprentice we were introduced to in The Force Awakens, and her origins. Fortunately, for any fellow information-hungry geeks, we won't have to wait longer than a few months to get a better idea of what to expect when Star Wars: The Last Jedi, sails into theaters. For now, it turns out we may already have a major clue about our beloved hero's origin, and it involves another enigmatic character from the new trilogy: Supreme Leader Snoke.

It turns out that one of the most recent trailers for reveals a clue when the Taiwanese subtitles are applied to said trailer. The footage features a fair share of homages to the original trilogy as well as story clues, but one fan may have discovered the biggest detail yet, seemingly hidden in plain sight beneath all the eye-popping explosions and action sequences. If it turns out to be true, then the trailer for The Last Jedi may have been more accidentally revelatory than we thought.

It's All About The Wording, You See

Thanks to Screenrant and one Reddit user's keen eye, the very beginning of The Last Jedi trailer holds the clue in question when the Taiwanese subtitles are applied. If you recall, we see looking out the window, with a voiceover from Snoke saying: "When I found you, I saw raw, untamed power. And beyond that, something truly special."

Due to the Supreme Leader's ties to Ren, we assumed the baddie was talking to Leia's conflicted kid. But surprisingly, that may not have been the case. A dedicated Reddit user by the name of SleepingAran decided to comb through the Taiwanese-subtitled version of the trailer and found an interesting detail. The fan pointed out that the subtitles make it clear that was actually referring to a female character, as explained in the post:

"The moment when Snoke says 'when I found you,' the subtitle uses the feminine 'you' which is '妳' as opposed to the gender neutral 'you' which is '你.' The former is the combination the word '女,' which means female and '尔' which means you; while the latter is gender neutral that can be used to indicates female and male, but mainly used for male."

Now, as explosive as this may sound, it's important to remember that this is mere speculation because The Last Jedi hasn't had the best track record with translations. When the film's title was first announced, for example, translated versions of it stated that "Last Jedi" referred to more than one noble warrior, which we found out later wasn't the case.

How Could Snoke Be Involved With Rey?

With that said, let's have some fun for a moment and assume that the Taiwanese subtitles were accurate with their gender translation. The most likely candidate for a female character who Snoke could interact with is , and that could have great implications for the character.

As mentioned, fans have been going crazy trying to figure out Rey's foggy origins. This new tidbit seems to give us a pivotal piece of the puzzle, with she and Snoke possibly having some shared backstory. There will naturally be some people assuming the ancient dark side dweller is her father, but from what we've heard, that's most likely not the case.

Back in August, director Rian Johnson revealed that the identity of our hero's parents wasn't relevant to the larger universe, stating: "It's important insofar as it's important to her. And I think it's important to her in terms of what is her place in all of this? What's going to define her in this story?" So, if shared DNA is (most likely) out of the question, what could be left between these two players?

There's Another Logical Way They Could Be Connected

While, admittedly, there's very little we know about The Last Jedi to speculate without delving into "unfounded theory" territory, this possible connection has me thinking something: Could Rey have been Snoke's apprentice when she was a child?

Snoke describes "raw, untamed power" in the trailer. Seeing how Rey was already quite proficient with the Force with just a day of training in , she clearly already had some experience with it. As such, it's not unreasonable to assume she was trained at a young age. Up until this point, we assumed that Luke was the one to first train her and then drop her off in Jakku, but perhaps it was actually Snoke, and she was dropped off in the desert planet by someone else to protect her from him.

Overall, I have a feeling that the possible connection (if there is a connection in the first place) between these two characters could have something to do with the mind-blowing plot twist The Last Jedi has been marketed to have. We'll get to know what's going on with Rey and Supreme Leader Snoke whenThe Last Jedi flies into theaters on December 15, 2017.

What do you think about this new Rey/Snoke theory? Do you think Snoke will be revealed as part of of our hero's origin in The Last Jedi? Let me know in the comments!
