Iron Fist hasn't had the smoothest introduction into the #MCU. Unlike its critically-praised companions, his series currently holds a 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That's definitely discouraging for fans of the character, but don't let the bad reviews let you down just yet, because the show still has the potential to open various possibilities for the larger MCU. And thanks to a newly-released detail, we know that might come in the form a new villain.
The series could be introducing an iconic Iron Fist adversary: Davos, a.k.a. Steel Serpent. During an interview with Yahoo! News, #JessicaHenwick, who plays Coleen Wing, stated there were two characters in the show that have not been revealed to the audience:
“There are two characters who come into the second half of Iron Fist season one who haven’t been announced yet. [...] It’s so frustrating because they knock it out of the park."
However, she revealed one of those two is an important piece in the larger puzzle:
"But there’s one in particular who fans are… it’s a comic book character who’s not been seen before and at the end of Iron Fist they set him up in a really interesting way… I think for me, that’s the most interesting relationship on the show.”
The interviewer then went right to the point and asked them if that character was the aforementioned Davos. #FinnJones answered:
“Maybe that’s what we were just errr… My publicist is looking at me with devil eyes. Hey look, that’s going to be announced very soon so I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s announced before these [interviews] even come to print.”
Keep in mind, this wasn't a confirmation that Steel Serpent was the one Henwick referred to, but Jones's response, as well as the character's history with Danny Rand seem to that being the case. Davos isn't a particularly well-known villain, so take a look at who he is.
Steel Serpent's History
The villain is essentially a dark #IronFist, the yin to Danny Rand's yang (or is it yang to his yin?). He's the son of Lei-Kung The Thunderer, who's in charge of training the wearer of the Iron Fist mantle in the mystical city of K'un-Lun. He spent his life preparing to achieve that and became a badass fighter. Unfortunately for him, he was bested in the combat trial to gain the power by Wendell Rand (Danny Rand's father).
This event made him become obsessed with the power of the Iron Fist, so he tried to defeat the legendary dragon, Shou-Lao... But as I'm sure you can imagine, rashness when trying to defeat a powerful ancient beast doesn't offer the best results, and Davos was left to die in the snow. His father found him, and he was banished from his home city... Yikes. Right there you can see the guy has some issues.
Anyway, after he learned that Danny Rand had defeated Shou-Lao, he went berserk with jealousy and tracked him down to New York City in order to take his power. Once in the Big Apple, Joy and Ward Meachum hired him to track down Iron Fist (who they believed murdered their father) and kill him.
It's #comicbooks, so of course his history branches off into many long and strange paths (including finally stealing the Iron Fist power) after that. But I used this part of his convoluted history to highlight just how closely it relates to what we know will be going on in the series. That makes his introduction in the project easy to adapt and highly likely, if we consider the fact that...
The Netflix/Marvel Shows Have Been Setting Up Davos From The Beginning
In #Daredevil Season 1, Madame Gao was shown to be distributing heroin called "Steel Serpent" and the drug packages had his distinctive wingless dragon symbol. This small reference could have been taken as a new adaptation on the concept of the villain, but as Marvel has shown us for almost ten years, it rarely teases something without making it a reality.

So yes, it looks like Steel Serpent is coming on the show, and he's definitely a great addition. We know Harold Meachum is Season 1's main antagonist and Danny Rand's main pain in the butt in his quest to take his parents' company back from him. However, he doesn't present a physical threat to the young martial arts expert. Davos, on the other hand, would not only a psychologically interesting villain, but also be a worthy physical match to the Immortal Iron Fist.
The only downside to his introduction would be that, going by Henwick's comments, he could be just a tease for the future. Considering the bad reception Iron Fist has been getting so far, a second season doesn't look likely. But that doesn't mean we'll never see him. Could Steel Serpent make his presence felt in #TheDefenders? Well, we'll have to wait a while to know that.
Do you think Steel Serpent will appear in Iron Fist? Who do you think the other character is? Let me know in the comments!
