Stephanie Meyer, the queen of the Twilight saga, is venturing into a new project that is vastly different from the young adult series that made her famous. While Twilight had its darker moments, The Rook - which Meyers will executive produce - is a supernatural spy series that takes darkness to a new level.
According to Variety, The Rook will follow a young woman who wakes up in a London park suffering from amnesia and surrounded by dead bodies, all wearing latex gloves. In her hands is a letter that reads: "The body you are wearing used to be mine." As she attempts to uncover her past and her role as the head of Britain’s supernatural secret service, she discovers she has peculiar abilities that could come in handy while she'd being pursued by paranormal adversaries.
When you start out any show with dead bodies, you know you're in for a fair amount of murder and gore, which will most likely, be brought to the screen in vivid glory. Though Twilight offered some bloody scenes, it shied away from going completely down the rabbit hole because of its young adult target audience. It looks like #TheRook is going to be a change of pace for Meyer and the viewers who are used to the romance of #Twilight.
The Rook is based upon a 2012 novel by Australian author Daniel O’Malley, which won the Aurealis Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. If the series stays true to the book, we can also expect lots of humor and sarcasm, especially from the female lead.
Starz head Chris Albrecht promised good things from the series when presenting at the Television Critics Association Press Tour.
'The Rook’ is instantly addictive from the very first scene and introduces what we believe will be one of the most fascinating and thrilling female protagonists on television.”
The series is set to premiere in 2018, and Twilight fans are already asking the question—will any Twilight stars pop up on the show? I guess we'll just have to tune in to find out!
Are you looking forward to The Rook?
