Whenever satirist, comedian, and talk show host is on TV, it's a near certainty that whatever is coming out of his mouth is facetious. So you can imagine 's suspicion when Colbert showed up on The Late Show (dressed, inexplicably, in a fake moustache, top hat, and cravat) and revealed he is in the upcoming The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in a scene in Laketown.
Though Colbert wouldn't reveal his exact scene, he assured Dave it was all true when Dave expressed his doubts:
Check IMDB. I’m in there. It says Stephen Colbert is in the movie. If it’s on the Internet, Dave, it’s true.
I and my wife and my two boys were invited down to New Zealand to play around with the folks in The Hobbit by Peter Jackson. We went down there, and we’re in a scene in Lake-town. I don’t want to say where in the movie. It’s kind of a Where’s Waldo.
Sure enough, a quick check of The Desolation of Smaug's IMDB page showed Colbert and what we can only guess are his two sons each listed as a "Laketown spy". Interesting.
Colbert has mostly voice work under his belt, but you can imagine that he, nerdy at heart as he is, jumped at the chance to be in 's Hobbit trilogy. Keep your eyes peeled during the scenes in Laketown to see if you can spot him and his boys.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters on December 13.
