The Green Arrow apparently never sleeps, as principal photography has officially started in Toronto for his new sci-fi film, Code 8. The project also happens to be a family affair, as Amell is starring and producing alongside his cousin, Robbie Amell. The two have previously worked together during Robbie's time as Ronnie Raymond (a.k.a. Firestorm) in the Arrowverse.
The project for a full film began through the crowdfund site, Indiegogo, with an initial goal of $200,000 — but due to the Amells' popular social media presence and perks for the backers, the project has earned a total of $1.91 million to date from more than 20,000 fans. The campaign included a 10-minute short film, directed by Jeff Chan, which introduced the world in which the film is set.
The cast and crew have recently added new backer rewards and have been updating plot details:
The film takes place in a world where 4% of the population are born with some type of supernatural ability. Instead of being billionaire superheroes, most ‘specials’ live in poverty and resort to crime, forcing the police to become more militarized.
The story follows Robbie Amell’s character who is struggling to pay for his ailing mother’s health treatment and gets lured into a lucrative criminal world by Stephen Amell’s character, who works for a drug lord (played by Greg Bryk).
The production has also just announced the addition of Fast and Furious alum Sung Kang, who appeared in the initial short film. Stephen and Robbie recently posted a video about the relaunch of the campaign, promising one-of-a-kind perks and new twists. They go on to promise that more money the project raises, the bigger the movie can be, and you as a fan have a unique chance to be a part of it.
