Later this year The Office will close its doors for the last time, as the show comes to an end after after eight years, nine seasons and a bucket-load of episodes. Developer/executive producer Greg Daniels had hoped that the finale of the show would see the return of its original central character Michael Scott, played with annoying and awkward brilliance by . However, it now seems that Scott has sat in the boss's chair for the last time, with NBC head honcho Bob Greenblatt saying:

We’re hopeful but I don’t think [Carell] will. He left in the way he wanted to leave, and he and Greg talked about it, and I don’t think he will. There’s maybe a little Hail Mary pass on a cameo, but I think the decision would be compromising his schedule. (via Deadline)

Shame. The seven seasons that Carell was on board for The Office were fantastic and the show has taken a real dip in quality since his departure. It would have been great for to come back one last time, if only to see him have a final head-to-head with his arch nemesis Toby, or for one last glimpse of Prison Mike.

2013 is going to be a busy year for Carell, with Despicable Me 2, Foxcatcher and Anchorman: The Legend Continues all set to hit theaters in the next twelve months. As for The Office, you can catch it Thursdays 9/8c on NBC.

Are you disappointed that Carell won't be returning for the season finale? What was your favorite Michael Scott moment from the show? Post funny things in the comments below!
