Two weeks before Stranger Things Season 2 hits Netflix, the streaming network released a surprise final trailer. It depicts the townspeople of Hawkins, Indiana, gearing up to take on monsters that have escaped from the Upside Down — it appears to be a full-scale invasion from the parallel dimension. Check it out below:

There's a lot to break down in this final trailer for Season 2, since it contains many quick shots. We paused and rewound so you don't have to — here are the most pivotal moments that might've slipped your eye.

Something Is Definitely Wrong With Will Byers

When Will began having visions of the Upside Down at the end of Season 1, it was clearly foreshadowing the events of Season 2. He has been hospitalized for extensive testing ... and it appears as if Will's examination takes place within Hawkins Lab. Could he even be held captive by government scientists? A shot of Chief Hopper and Bob Newby (Sean Astin) running away with Will in their arms could be the proof of that.

Let's just hope Hopper can get Will out of there before they're captured!

Hopper is back at it, gun at the ready, venturing into dark passages and getting into situations that may be out of his control — but he's probably not prepared for the kinds of horrors that await him in a parallel dimension.

Hopper can be seen descending into a shadowy tunnel, and later inspecting a flower-like growth, proving that he will in fact venture into the nightmare world for an extended period of time.

Hopper is not the only one traveling to the Upside Down. A brief shot of Mike Wheeler and his friends depicts them stepping through a cave's opening that is covered in tentacle-like growths.

The children have covered their faces when entering the Upside Down. Could their use of bandannas indicate what they're facing is hazardous?

What Is Hopper Getting Involved In?

Hopper will be taken in by the scientists currently working at Hawkins Laboratory, at least judging from a shot of him being decontaminated. Episode 6 is titled "The Spy"—could it be a reference to Hopper infiltrating the lab as some sort of double agent?

Another glimpse of Hopper shows him in a decontamination suit. If Hopper has brokered some kind of deal with these scientists, what will they offer him? Could this turn him into an agent for Hawkins National Laboratory?

Eleven Comes Back ... With Long Hair?

We've known for some time that Eleven would make her comeback in Season 2, but we didn't know exactly how her return would take place. Apparently, her growth in hair indicates the time she's spent away from Hawkins.

The previous trailer showed her in the parallel world, touching some kind of energy bursts. No one knew what that scene meant — but her lack of hair in the image below leads me to believe that she'll remain with the Upside Down for a substantial span of time.

The events of Season 1 began around November 1983. Season 2 takes place around Halloween 1984, evidenced by the Ghostbusters costumes that Mike and his friends are wearing. Therefore, Eleven has been absent for almost a year. But how much time has she spent back in the Upside Down?

The Shadow Monster Is Here

Several screenshots show Will facing the creature, and one in particular depicts Will Byers facing down the Shadow Monster as it towers over a school. The scene cuts off shortly thereafter, but it's clear this creature from another world is indeed wreaking havoc on the unsuspecting town of Hawkins.

The Byers Home Will Be The Site Of A Major Battle

The final shot of note depicts the majority of the Stranger Things main cast in the Byers home, all armed up and ready to fire on an unseen adversary. Is it the Shadow Monster, or someone/something else?

Hopper throws a rifle to Nancy Wheeler, and he holds one himself. The rest of the gang seem to be bracing for an attack as well. We don't know what they're looking at, but their reaction tells us that danger is approaching.

Are We In For A Grim Ending To Season 2?

The upcoming season of Stranger Things is rounding out to be a very dark tale. Will Byers is going through an episode of post-traumatic stress disorder from the Upside Down. Chief Hopper's journey presents a chance for him to become a casualty this season. The rest of the town's residents are in just as much danger, due to the Shadow Monster. With that much peril, Season 2 might not leave us with a happy ending.

Stranger Things returns on Netflix on October 27, 2017.
