The first season of Netflix's smash-hit #StrangerThings dealt with a lot of creepy stuff: unusual happenings, shady organizations and questionable best friends. But nothing was creepier than the villain of the story — the Demogorgan. The creature kidnapped Will Byers and took him to the other-worldy dimension known as the Upside Down.
As the first season was about Will's disappearance, the character was absent for the majority of it. However, that doesn't appear to be the case in Season 2.
In an interview with Mashable, director Shawn Levy discussed Will's role in the upcoming season, and confirmed that we would be seeing a lot more of actor Noah Schnapp this year:
"When we cast the kids, we cast Noah Schnapp as Will Byers knowing that he was only in a small amount of Season 1 because he was missing. And we cast him because we knew that kid was special. Even if we weren’t going to call on his full reservoir of abilities in Season 1. Will Byers is very much at the center of Season 2."
Now that Will is back, it's great to hear that he'll have a bigger presence this year. However, his more significant role in Season 2 raises some interesting questions. After all, it's already been a year since he returned safely from the Upside Down, so what awaits him?
Could Will Be The Villain Of Season 2?
When Will returned from the Upside Down, he didn't seem to be his usual upbeat self. In fact, he even coughed up a slug and briefly imagined his own bathroom to be the Upside Down. But perhaps he didn't imagine it — it's possible that his time there resulted in him becoming an anchor between both worlds.
Levy revealed that Schnapp really steps up his performance this season, and it makes us wonder just how much the Upside Down affected Will. Levy commented:
"Noah steps up in the most staggering way. The Duffers and I, depending on who’s directing when, we keep sending texts to each other going, 'holy shit, Noah is crushing it' and we knew he had it in him, and it’s really now to get in that moment, and put him firmly in the thick of story."
This definitely suggests that the character will embark on an emotional rollercoaster this season. Remember, the Season 2 Super Bowl trailer seemed to suggest that Will may have acquired telekinetic powers — much like Eleven — which may have permanently linked him to the other-worldly dimension (and that terrifying spider-like monster).
But could this link turn him into Season 2's Big Bad? If Will does indeed have telekinetic powers, it's possible that he could summon the darkness of the netherworld to manifest in the town of Hawkins. After all, we were told that we'll be spending a lot more time in the other-worldy dimension this season.
But the question is: if the world does indeed turn "Upside Down" in Season 2 like we were promised, is Will Byers responsible for it?
