When Netflix's hit show Stranger Things was renewed for a second season, we were left with many questions, one of the most important being: What new threats await the residents of Hawkins? Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas and Will encountered some creepy stuff in the Upside Down during Season 1, but nothing was more terrifying than the Demogorgon. Thus, we had to wonder if it was even possible to come up with a scarier monster for second season. And then the Season 2 trailer dropped.
While the trailer teased us with the new season's storyline, undoubtedly the biggest talking point of the preview was the mysterious new monster. The spider-like creature that emerged from the clouds had us all intrigued, and there were plenty of interesting theories put forward in an attempt to explain the unknown monster's identity.
Beware Of The Shadow Monster
At Netflix's FYSee Space event on Tuesday night, series star Finn Wolfhard revealed the name of the monster during an interview with TV Guide. Check out the interview below:
Discussing the monster and the visual effects on the show, Wolfhard commented:
“Our visual effects team is so good. Even the first season we were like really, really cool. But the shadow monster — the new one, the big one in the sky — that was like crazy for us.”
The shadow monster certainly sounds like a worthy title for the mysterious creature, but it raises questions about its appearance. After all, the name makes total sense as we only really saw its silhouette in the trailer, but it also suggests that it may continue to make its shadow-like presence felt throughout the season before finally revealing itself towards the end.
As we have seen in both TV and film, #horror stories can thrive on the idea of the threat alone, and thus we may not actually see what the Shadow Monster looks like until well into the second season. And with a name like that, it already sounds terrifying.
