Those of you who are sad to see Superman temporarily leave Kara won't have to wait too long for another DC character to join Supergirl! Miss Martian is set to make her debut in Episode 3, 'Welcome To Earth'. Although the alien hero won't be too happy, if the preview trailer is anything to go by.

For most of the clip, Supergirl fights off an unknown adversary, whose numerous abilities could even rival Kara's own. But towards the end of the trailer, the mystery woman's skin turns green, her eyes grow red and energy shoots out from her eyes, signifying that Miss Martian has officially joined the show.

Fans of DC comics and Young Justice alike should be thrilled to see the popular character finally appear in live action — but Miss Martian's debut in this Supergirl preview does raise a number of questions that will require some serious Clark Kent-style sleuthing to answer before next week's episode.

M'gann M'orzz first appeared in the pages of Teen Titans back in 2007, but it wasn't until she became a principal character in the Young Justice cartoon that her popularity really began to take off. On the show, Miss Martian strove to conceal her true identity as a white Martian, using her shapeshifting abilities to masquerade instead as a kinder, green Martian. Ultimately though, M'gann proved herself time and time again to be one of the most heroic members of them all.

As a Martian, M'gann possesses the same abilities as Martian Manhunter, including;

  • Superhuman strength and stamina
  • Invulnerability
  • Shapeshifting
  • Regeneration
  • Invisibility
  • Intangibility
  • Telepathy
  • Telekinesis & Flight
  • Martian Vision

Judging from the look of that list, Supergirl would be in for a whole world of pain if Miss Martian was a villain. Fortunately, M'gann's on the side of the good guys — or is she?

Why Is Miss Martian Fighting Supergirl In The Clip?

Although the woman fighting Kara is clearly supposed to be Miss Martian, it seems odd that the newcomer would attack Supergirl, as she's usually a hero in the comics. However, there could be a number of ways to account for this.

First of all, we know that superhero clashes are just part and parcel of fighting crime, so there's a chance that the two could just randomly brawl due to some contrived misunderstanding. However, we have more faith in the Supergirl show runners than that. After all, we know for a fact that Kara's mother isn't called Martha, and we're hoping M'gann's isn't either.

Episode 3 is set to explore how the Government and Project Cadmus intend to deal with alien threats in terms of immigration laws, so it's more likely that Miss Martian may physically oppose this, leading to a brief confrontation with Kara before they realize they're on the same side.

However, we were briefly thrown off by the fact that Sharon Leal clearly isn't playing Miss Martian in the trailer, despite being officially cast in the role, so it looks like her shapeshifting abilities could have come into play here. Earlier in the trailer, that same character shoots fire from her hands — something that the Martians detest above all else — so it would make sense if M'Gann had just impersonated the true villain at some point instead. If that's the case, then perhaps the preview was just cut in a particular way to mislead us into thinking that M'Gann and Supergirl will come to blows.

What Does The Future Hold For Miss Martian On Supergirl?

The first official mention of M'gann's appearance on the show was revealed in the synopsis for Episode 4, 'Survivors', where we discover that the Martian Manhunter is overjoyed to learn that he's no longer the last remaining member of his race. Whether M'gann turns out to be Hank's niece like in the animated show Young Justice, or whether they're simply members of the same alien species remains to be seen. Regardless, we're sure the two will develop a strong bond.

In terms of conflict, it's likely that the show is going to explore the White Martian race in more detail through Miss Martian's character. Season 1 first provided us with a glimpse of the species who wiped out Hank's family on Mars, and it would be fascinating for him to become close to M'gann, only to discover that she's a White Martian in disguise. While M'gann isn't evil like her brethren, the hero will still face opposition from both Hank and the public as well if her true identity is ever revealed.

Before anything like that happens though, M'gann will probably become embroiled in the immigration issues that the show is set to explore first, fighting alongside Kara and the Martian Manhunter as fellow aliens.

It's still early days for Miss Martian, but if Supergirl can capture what made the hero so popular on Young Justice in the first place, M'gann could very well be the breakout character of the season. Watch your back, Kal-El — just saying.
