Note: This article contains spoilers from Supergirl Season 2.
#Supergirl has been thriving on The CW, and the second season of the #superhero drama has been the most thrilling yet as the Girl of Steel defended National City from several threats. However, Kara will meet her deadliest foe in next week's episode "Resist" as she battles Teri Hatcher's Queen Rhea and her army of Daxamites.
Brand new photos from the upcoming penultimate episode of the hit series provide a first look at the struggles Kara will face as Rhea puts her plan in motion to create New Daxam on earth. Arguably the most star-studded episode yet, with appearances from legendary actresses Lynda Carter and Calista Flockhart, "Resist" will also see Supergirl team up with an unlikely force to defeat Rhea.
Team D.E.O Join Forces With CADMUS
While Rhea has proven to be a thorn in Supergirl's side, there's no doubt that her greatest nemesis this season has been Lillian Luthor and her CADMUS facilities. Having tried to extinguish all alien life forms from Earth, including the Girl of Steel, Lillian has found herself on the wrong side of the law on several occasions. However, it appears that Lillian will put her differences aside next week and teams up with the D.E.O in order to take out Rhea and her army.
Remember, Rhea is keeping Lena Luthor hostage so this is the perfect opportunity for Lillian to swoop into action and prove that she does, in fact, love her daughter. Supergirl may dislike what the eldest Luthor stands for, but at the end of the day she possesses the means to destroy alien life — and that's exactly the kind of heavy artillery Kara will need to take down Rhea. Let's hope there not too late!
The Queen Is Back
Although Supergirl has largely improved during the second season, there has been a large gaping hole in the show since Calista Flockhart and her sassy character Cat Grant departed back in the third episode of the season. Professionally, James Olsen and Snapper Carr have been manning the deck at CatCo, but neither of the two gentlemen possess the warmth that Flockhart's Cat brought to the show.
Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told TV Line that Cat returns to National City for personal reasons but that doesn't stop the media mogul from getting involved in some crime fighting escapades:
"What’s great about these episodes is that Cat actually gets to do some things she’s never done before. But she also gets to perform the role that she always has, being a mentor and a role model — not just for Supergirl, but also for Kara"
Supergirl faces the fight of her life in next week's episode, and if there's one thing she is in need of, it's an inspirational pep talk from Cat Grant. In the past, those pep talks have given Supergirl the courage she's needed to overcome all sorts of evil — and without her mentor's words of wisdom, there's no guarantee that Supergirl would be the hero that she is today.
Cat Grant was originally supposed to appear throughout the season but due to Flockhart being unable to commute from L.A. to Vancouver on a regular basis, the character was written out. She is set to appear in the final two episodes of the season. Let's hope the actress' appearances are more regular during the third season because her presence had been sorely missed.
Not only are we treated to an appearance by Flockhart, but former Wonder Woman Lynda Carter makes her return to the show in this week's episode as President Olivia Mardsin. Last we saw Marsdin she revealed her true alien form to viewers, so who knows what her real motives are? Either way, the president will pull out all the stops to ensure Rhea's capture.
In addition to this, Supergirl will feature a particularly awesome moment as Carter and Flockhart feature in a scene together when Marsdin meets Cat Grant.
Without a doubt two of the most influential television actresses of all time, Carter and Flockhart did a lot for powerful female representation — and their respective shows, Wonder Woman and Ally McBeal paved the way for shows like Supergirl. Who knows where #TV would be today without their contribution? One thing's for sure — we can't wait to see the two actresses interact in Supergirl.
Rhea Takes Her Plans To The Next Level
With Mon-El back under her control, Rhea takes things to the next level. The one good thing about Rhea's re-appearance is how affectionately she has felt towards Lena Luthor and, despite her villainous motives, it looks like she's going to reward her by making her princess of New Daxam. In a bizarre turn of events, Rhea orchestrates a wedding between Mon-El and Lena.
Let's hope Supergirl can make it to the church on time before the love of her life marries her best friend — that would definitely be an awkward discussion over their next lunch date!
Supergirl airs Mondays on The CW.
