Everyone has to start their career somewhere, right? Some may find it by starring in a music video, whereas others find their path to glory through starring in a commercial. Either way, getting your foot in the door could well be the start of something big. Below is a list of 10 actors who starred in commercials before hitting the big time as a famous superhero.
10. Jean Grey Advertising Exclamation Perfume
Jean Grey is a star of the #XMen films, using her powers of telepathy, telekinesis and mind control to help combat evil. Despite her caring persona, Grey has to battle her own demons, as she is also an Omega-level mutant, where she transforms into the villainous Phoenix.
#FamkeJanssen played Jean Grey in four of the X-Men films from 2000–2014 and The Wolverine in 2013. Way before this, in 1988, the Dutch actress appeared in a commercial for Exclamation perfume.
You can watch Janssen pouting away in the video below:
9. The Amazing Spider-Man Advertising Doritos
Peter Parker is a perfect representation of teenage boys: questionable fashion, permanent identity crisis, and always having something sticky on his hands. However, throw in a spider bite, and he becomes one of the most recognizable superheroes ever: #SpiderMan. Soon to be seen later this year in #SpiderManHomecoming, featuring Tom Holland in the titular role, Peter Parker is a great example that sometimes the geek does get the girl.
Now, the song lyrics go: "Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can. Spins a web, any size. Catches thieves, just like flies." Not to be pedantic, but I've never seen a spider showing off some awful dad-style dancing skills, let alone chowing down on some Doritos, but that's exactly what The Amazing Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield did in a 2006 commercial.
You can watch Garfield munching away in the commercial below:
8. Batman Advertising Pac-Man Cereal
What happens if you witness your parents being murdered at a young age and then become a millionaire soon after? That's right, you blow your fortune and enter rehab for the rest of your life while battling addictions to help you overcome your problems. Also, probably therapy. Not if you're #BruceWayne, who decided that combating crime and having an obsession for fast cars was the ultimate therapy. Oh, and having an overwhelming fascination for rubber, naturally. Just don't mention "nipples."
Christian Bale donned the Batsuit for three films from 2005–2012, but when he was only nine years old, he starred in a commercial for Pac-Man cereal. Now, we've had the 2016 film Batman v Superman where #Batman took on Superman, but could the next battle be Batman vs. Pac-Man? We can only hope.
You can watch a young #ChristianBale in the video below:
7. Hawkeye Advertising Bud Light
After being orphaned following the death of their parents in a car accident, Clint Barton and his brother, Barney, joined the Carnival of Traveling Wonders as unskilled laborers. Having witnessed a robbery at the circus and being abandoned by his brother for not agreeing to become a partner in crime, Hawkeye decided to hone his archery skills to help fight crime.
Jeremy Renner became the expert archer and marksman in Thor, The Avengers, Age of Ultron, Civil War and will be in the upcoming #AvengersInfinityWar. In 1998, Renner starred in an ad for Bud Light, displaying the traditional haircut that was made famous by the Backstreet Boys.
You can watch Renner enjoying a nice cold Bud in the commercial below:
6. Daredevil Advertising Burger King
Matt Murdock was raised by his father, Jack, who wanted his son to have a life much different than his own. By instilling the importance of education and ensuring that Murdock understands that violence is never the answer, Jack tries his best to ensure his son becomes a better person than himself. In his adulthood, Murdock was in an accident that left him blind. Heightening his remaining senses, Murdock took on the identity of #Daredevil, using his powers to dole out street justice.
Now, we know #CharlieCox for playing Daredevil, but prior to him stepping into the role, #BenAffleck was the Man Without Fear. However, before he was a double Academy Award winner, he starred in a commercial for Burger King in 1989 at the age of 17. In the future though, I think it's best that Affleck learns to not be on the phone when driving.
Watch Affleck in the Burger King ad below:
5. Ant-Man Advertising The Super Nintendo
Scott Lang was an electronics expert who found it hard to financially support his family. Resorting to a life of burglary, Lang found himself in trouble with the law, resulting in his arrest and ultimate imprisonment. During this time, Lang decided to further his interest in electronics, leading him to become hired by Stark International. After learning that his daughter had a serious heart condition, Lang resorted to burglary again, this time breaking into the home of Dr. Henry Pym. Stealing his #AntMan uniform and some shrinking gas, Lang managed to save his daughter and went on to help other superheroes such as Iron Man and The Avengers.
Since appearing in Ant-Man, #PaulRudd went on to reprise his role in Captain America: Civil War and will soon be seen in Avengers: Infinity War and his own sequel #AntManandtheWasp. Years before his breakout role in 1995's Clueless, Rudd appeared in a commercial for Super Nintendo.
You can watch 22-year-old Rudd in the 1991 ad below:
4. Superman Advertising Diet Coke
Kal-El was born on the planet Krypton to his parents Jor-El and Lara. Desperate to protect their son, they launched him into space. He eventually landed on Earth. Helping to protect the planet from multiple threats, he soon became known as #Superman, standing for "Truth, Justice, and the American Way."
These days, you probably associate #Superman with the likes of Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, Tom Welling or Henry Cavill. However, this particular commercial features the one and only #DeanCain, star of '90s TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. Before donning the spandex and cape, he chugged some Diet Coke back in 1990.
Watch below to see Cain getting refreshed:
3. The Hulk Advertising Clearasil
It can't be easy transforming from a talented doctor into the world's most angry, oversized Brussels sprout, but that's exactly what happened to poor Bruce Banner after being the victim of an accidental overdose of gamma radiation.
#MarkRuffalo played Bruce Banner/Hulk in The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Age of Ultron and will soon be appearing in the upcoming #ThorRagnarok and Avengers: Infinity War. When he was 22, Ruffalo starred in an ad for Clearasil, a product that most teenagers will be familiar with. At least it's safe to say that when Banner got angry and turned into the Hulk, it wasn't due to a massive zit ruining his complexion.
Watch Ruffalo and his lovely complexion in the commercial below:
2. Spider-Man Advertising The Atari
The second Spider-Man to appear on this list, this one features #TobeyMaguire, who played Spidey in Sam Raimi's original live-action trilogy.
Back in 1990, however, Maguire starred in an ad for the Atari Lynx, whose games included Electrocop, Gates of Zendocon, and RoadBlasters. A then-15-year-old Maguire encouraged school kids to ditch class for a toilet break to play on the console. What on Earth would Peter Parker have to say about ditching class?
Watch Maguire having a "bathroom break" in the video below:
1. Captain America Advertising Mystery Date
#CaptainAmerica is the alter-ego of Steve Rogers, a former prospective volunteer for the military during World War II. Having been rejected due to his weak and physically unfit condition, Rogers was selected to participate in a top-secret experiment held by the government. In order to create a "super soldier," Rogers was transformed into a patriotic superhero.
Back in 2002, #ChrisEvans starred in an advert for Mystery Date as "Tyler." Would you hang out with this 5'9" 150 lb. stud? If your hobbies include water skiing and your ideal date is a walk around the cliffs followed by hanging out by the bonfire with other friends, then Tyler is your man!
