Entertainment Weekly has released a multitude of stories this week from Star Wars: The Last Jedi, with more behind-the-scenes footage from the set as well as images of characters both new and familiar. These photos include everything from the cutest Star Wars creatures ever, to Supreme Leader Snoke’s intimidating new Praetorian Guards, along with details on how they may be utilized in the story.

Speaking of Supreme Leader Snoke, EW has also announced that Andy Serkis’s character will be a complete motion-capture performance. While fans have only seen him in holographic form, it’s good news to be reassured that we will receiving another motion-capture achievement to ’s repertoire.

Director Rian Johnson Discusses Supreme Leader Snoke

Talking with EW, revealed that fans can expect this character to be brought to life by the great mo-cap performance of Andy Serkis:

“No, it’s entirely a mo-cap performance. Neal Scanlan (Creature Designer) built a maquette that we had on set for lighting reference and to give the actors a sense of what it was going to feel like. And then we scanned that and [Industrial Light & Magic] used that in their renderings, but Snoke will be an entirely CG creation.”

The maquette Johnson is referring to, is possibly the one fans have speculated that Serkis would be utilizing some prosthetics. However, this is not the case as Johnson made it very clear that Serkis will be using his mo-cap talents to bring the Supreme Leader to life.

Johnson also opened up that fans will be getting a chance to see Snoke in action this time around as opposed to him just sitting in his large chair. Here’s what Johnson had to say after shooting Serkis’s scenes:

“I’d be sitting at the monitor just with my eyes as big as dinner plates It’s one of those performances where after every line, I’d look over at whoever’s standing next to me with an expression on my face like, ‘Oh, my God, we just got that.”

I cannot wait to see Snoke in action. Though it was cool seeing the Emperor take on Yoda in , watching Snoke fight someone could be something truly special, CGI or not. Online speculation over who Snoke will be fighting has reached a fever pitch lately. My guess is that it’ll either be , or even both.

CGI Or Not, Supreme Leader Snoke Is In Good Hands

While this may disappoint some who were expecting some practical effects, fans can rest assured in the final product. is lucky to have the best in the business when it comes to a motion-capture performance. Audiences are well-aware of Serkis’s notable characters including Gollum, Peter Jackson’s King Kong, and of course Caesar from the new Planet of the Apes trilogy. is in good hands.

Another crucial nugget of information was also released by director Rian Johnson, who states that his film won’t go into great detail regarding Snoke’s entire legacy:

“Similar to Rey’s parentage, Snoke is here to serve a function in the story. And a story is not a Wikipedia page. For example, in the original trilogy, we didn’t know anything about the Emperor except what Luke knew about him, that he’s the evil guy behind Vader. Then in the prequels, you knew everything about Palpatine because his rise to power was the story.”

Here Johnson also mentions Rey’s parentage, which we’ve yet to learn up until this point. However, Johnson's notes on the Emperor puts that secrecy into better context. Fans have come to learn more about the Emperor’s upbringing to power in the prequel trilogy. Unlike the prequels, the original trilogy only sprinkled the Emperor throughout the last two films.

is mentioned in the original film, has a quick holographic cameo in Empire Strikes Back, and is featured more prominently in . According to Johnson, Snoke won’t be any different. We’ll understand his intentions, but won’t know anything more than that. Perhaps some future novels or comics will go into greater detail regarding Snoke’s rise to power.
