Last year at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios left fans delighted by revealing concept art from Thor: Ragnarok. The images were never released online, but Marvel's liveblog of the event noted that they included the fire demon Surtur. It's definitely appropriate for Surtur to be involved in the film — after all, he features heavily in the Norse poem Völuspá, which tells the tale of Ragnarok.

Now, 12 months on, we've finally had our first glimpse of Marvel's design for Surtur. Not through concept art, nor through another trailer. No, this reveal is courtesy of a Funko Pop.

Funko has just revealed some of their Thor: Ragnarok range, and the adorable toys are definitely worth checking out. Many Marvel fans are already pointing to the stunning Gladiator Hulk design, possibly one of the best Marvel Funko Pops to date. But this is the one that's really breaking news, as it suggests just how Marvel will redesign Surtur.

Who Is Surtur?

In Comics, Surtur is a fire demon who rules one of the Nine Realms, and awaits the day when he can seek a brutal revenge upon Asgard. He's a major recurring villain in Thor comics, and in one arc actually destroyed the Realm Eternal.

This design is a fascinating one, blending the comic book concept — a horned fire-demon who sometimes wears armor — with a sort of flaming skeleton. Keep an eye on that sword; it looks to be the famous Twilight Sword, Surtur's mystic blade that is powerful enough to cleave through dimensional barriers. You're talking a weapon that can withstand the full force of Mjolnir, making Surtur a threat like none Thor has ever faced before!

Fans had already suspected we'd see the Twilight Sword in Thor: Ragnarok. After all, the trailer showed Hela wielding a mysterious blade, and then summoning fire to sweep across Immortal Asgard. Hela briefly possessed the Twilight Sword in the comics, too, and its power was so great that Hela threatened to unbalance all Nine Realms.

So there you have it, Marvel fans, our first glimpse of the design for Surtur, the fire demon who will surely be at the heart of Thor: Ragnarok. The Twilight of the Gods is coming, and Immortal Asgard looks set to fall in flames before the wrath of Hela. Now, we finally get a sense of just what her powerful ally will look like — all thanks to a Funko Pop.
