After having a rough career lull in the '90 through mid-'00s, Sylvester Stallone's recent film career proves that good things truly do come to those who wait. He jumpstarted the geri-action genre with The Expendables franchise, he successfully rebooted the franchise twice with the standalone Rocky Balboa and critically acclaimed spin-off Creed, and he even got to become a Guardian of the Galaxy in Marvel's sequel to the hit sci-fi comic book adventure.

The 71-year-old actor will now set his sights on dramatic television as he is set to guest star on the upcoming season of NBC's surprise hit drama This Is Us, Variety reports.

Update (August 14, 2017): Stallone has posted a few pics from the set...

The series, which follows a group of siblings born on the same day whose modern-day stories interlink at various points, as we also learn about their parents in a flashback timeline, received widespread critical acclaim from critics, who singled out the noteworthy performances from its cast members, especially that of Sterling K. Brown. The first season was a hit in the ratings, averaging roughly 14.7 million viewers per episode.

Showrunner/creator Dan Fogelman (Galavant, Pitch) revealed at the TCA summer press tour that the action star is booked for an episode in the 18-episode second season, in which he will play a major part in the life of Kevin Pearson (Justin Hartley). Stallone will play an actor co-starring in the film-within-the-series, and will act as a "mentor figure" that will bring up issues Pearson is having with his father that resonate with Stallone himself.

According to Folgeman, Stallone's character will deliver a "beautiful monologue about life," speaking to Kevin (Hartley's character) about his own experiences of "loss and aging and the business."

Stallone joins the list of major guest stars this season, which also includes Dan Lauria (Pitch, The Wonder Years) and Debra Jo Rupp (, That '70s Show). The second season will premiere on NBC on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 9 p.m.
