In 2013, Taylor Swift accused David Mueller of groping her during a backstage meet-and-greet, and a rollercoaster of a legal battle has been underway ever since. This week has been particularly hard for the "Blank Space" hitmaker, as she took the stand to testify against Mueller and also had to endure heavy scrutiny from Mueller's lawyers. Fortunately, this rough ride has finally come to an end.
Things started looking up when the judge presiding over the case, William J. Martínez, dismissed Mueller's $3 million suit against the singer. The former DJ alleged Swift had gotten him fired from his job at KYGO and sued for defamation. Now, after that small yet important victory, Swift can finally begin to take the steps to put this difficult matter behind her.
Following a seven-hour deliberation process on August 14, a jury ruled David Mueller guilty for battery and sexual assault against #TaylorSwift. As for Swift's mother, Andrea Swift, and manager, Frank Bell, the jury ruled they didn't interfere with Mueller's firing.
It's reported that following the verdict, the singer hugged her attorneys and mother, and said "Thank you" to the jury.
Taylor Swift Responds To This Huge Victory
Shortly after the ruling, the songstress released this powerful statement through People and Entertainment Weekly:
"I want to thank Judge William J. Martinez and the jury for their careful consideration, my attorneys Doug Baldridge, Danielle Foley, Jay Schaudies and Katie Wright for fighting for me and anyone who feels silenced by a sexual assault, and especially anyone who offered their support throughout this four-year ordeal and two-year long trial process."
Swift went on to reiterate her goal to donate money to organizations focused on helping people who've been victims of sexual abuse:
"I acknowledge the privilege that I benefit from in life, in society and in my ability to shoulder the enormous cost of defending myself in a trial like this. My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard. Therefore, I will be making donations in the near future to multiple organizations that help sexual assault victims defend themselves."
Countless people around the world have suffered some form of sexual abuse and can't afford to go through the legal process to speak out, so it's amazing to have a voice like her joining the cause against disgusting actions like this one.
One of Swift's lawyers, Doug Baldridge, was interviewed outside the courtroom soon after the ruling, and he shared the singer's sentiment regarding the relevance of her case in our society:
"I think it's a new day, because someone with the guts and the courage to stand up with absolutely no upside in doing so—that being Taylor Swift—has told everyone, 'This is it, the line's drawn.'"
As part of her win, Swift will be paid $1 in damages –– an amount she requested as a symbolic sign for women who have been or currently are in her situation. Ever since news of the ruling was released, fans have shown an outpour of support for her on both her Instagram and Twitter. Hopefully everything can begin to settle for Swift moving forward now that his matter has been resolved.
