Now that we're about to start the biggest season for movies, I thought I should take a look back at 2012 - the most financially successful year in film history. Last year, we saw the final installments of The Dark Knight Trilogy and The Twilight Saga, as we also welcomed The Hunger Games series and Marc Webb's Spider-Man franchise. There were continuing films that were already part of amazing franchises such as Skyfall, Men In Black 3, and The Avengers. Sadly, we were also served with John Carter, Battleship, and That's My Boy, but we were also graced with Ted, Chronicle, and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. 2012 is also the only year to have four films to hit the highly exclusive "billion dollar club", with two of of its directors already having films there. In case you didn't know, here are the ten highest grossing films of last year:

The Avengers
Director:
Total: $1.5 billion

Skyfall
Director:
Total: $1.1 billion

The Dark Knight Rises
Director:
Total: $ 1,081,041,287

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Director:
Total: $1,015,557,024

Ice Age: Continental Drift
Director:
Total: $877,000

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2
Director:
Total: $829,000

The Amazing Spider-Man
Director:
Total: $752,000

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted
Director:
Total: $742,000

The Hunger Games
Director:
Total: $691,000

Men in Black 3
Director:
Total: $624,000

Now let's look towards the end of 2013, and what the top ten grossing films of the year could be. My bets would be on:

Man of Steel
Director:
Total: $1 billion

Monsters University
Director:
Total: $1 Billion

Iron Man 3
Director:
Total: $750 million

Star Trek Into Darkness
Director:
Total: $720 million

Total: $515 million

The Smurfs 2
