A brand new trailer for upcoming thriller The Circle has been released, and it's super creepy. The movie tells the story of a woman (Emma Watson) who scores a job at a massive technology company, but soon begins to uncover the disturbing truth beneath its hip millennial facade.
As well as giving us a more in-depth insight into the film's fictional internet company The Circle, it draws some unnerving parallels with our own technological, social media-driven society. Check it out for yourself:

Some Seriously Dark Details
If that made you feel uncomfortable enough to start covering up your webcam, then the following details may just make you delete your Facebook. Here's what we learned from #TheCircle's latest trailer:
7. The Circle Is Basically A Cult
Apple fanatics can be pretty intense, but The Circle takes it to the next level. "Circlers" encouraging outsiders to "join us" whilst stressing the importance of being "valued" and cared about is all signature cult recruitment behavior. While a sense of belonging and community is fostered through group activities and cheerful song or chanting, independence and autonomy are broken down in favor of the collective. It's a psychological ploy to control and manipulate, and it's effective. And let's be honest: Tom Hanks looks like a pretty convincing cult leader.
Creepier yet, the film's Facebook page mentions the words, "It’s not conformity. It’s unity." Again, it's the subtle erasure of individual identity in order to turn people into part of the more important whole. Will Emma Watson's character be able to get out?
6. Their Headquarters Look A Lot Like Google
Is it just me, or does The Circle's headquarters look a hell of a lot like Google's massive campuses? It's built much like a town, and boasts a unique and inclusive work atmosphere for employees, including some amazing perks. Actually, The Circle looks to be absolutely loaded with similarities to Google— and not in an entirely positive way. After all, Google have hardly built a reputation on respecting the public's privacy.
5. Tom Hanks' Character Is Basically Steve Jobs And Mark Zuckerberg Combined
...with a good dash of villain thrown in. He may not be wearing a turtleneck, but Hanks clearly took inspiration from the world's two most recognizable tech CEOs. In fact, it looks like both Zuckerberg and Hanks' character may have a penchant for Northface thermal jackets:
4. It's About More Than Just Surveillance
The Circle's trailer has a lot going on, and it's teasing more than a world dominated by CCTV.
First of all, the product seems to have an augmented reality (AR) component, the likes of which we saw used in a pretty disturbing episode of Black Mirror. AR and VR are beginning to permeate every kind of entertainment, and it's only a matter of time before it becomes a standard component of our social media use.
Speaking of social media, the trailer shows Watson's boyfriend criticizing her immersion in documenting her life rather than living it, and the manner in which she filters her experiences through a lens. That's one theme that's all too familiar to basically any social media user.
Then there's the mention of the health plan. The company offers Watson's character access to their health plan, which may be a great help to her father, who suffers from MS.
But as Watson stands in front of a screen showin what looks to be a detailed chart of her own body and health, you can't help but wonder if it's a tad too invasive. This service may have its benefits, but at what cost? Would you really want a corporation holding that kind of information about you? More importantly, it highlights the ease at which we sign up to seemingly free services, without really understanding what the fine print entails. It's so easy to sign away our privacy and rights with just one click.
3. John Boyega Is Trying To Save Another Damsel In Distress
It looks like John Boyega may be starting to get typecast in his roles. In Star Wars, his character Finn is constantly trying to rescue Rey, despite her many refusals to play the part of damsel in distress.
The same might just be said for his character in The Circle. He may have a romantic interest in Watson's character, and seems desperate to save her. Then again, maybe Watson's character really does need his help. Or worse yet: could he actually be the villain?
2. Something Horrifying Is Going To Happen
A curious glimpse of someone stranded on a boat on a stormy night reveals The Circle isn't all tense dialog and pensive walks around an office. It's got action, as well as some very real danger.
Even more intriguing is Watson's character screaming in horror on-stage at a presentation towards the end of the trailer. What could be happening? That's one detail that prospective viewers will surely be dying to find out.
1. Is That A Westworld Reference?
This detail isn't actually from the trailer, but a poster. The logo for The Circle on the film's poster looks incredibly similar to something from a recent sci-fi hit: the maze from Westworld. Is this a hint at what to expect from this gripping drama? Time to get back into those crazy fan theories!
