The CW Arrowverse crossover just came to a close, which brought together Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Given the popularity of the event, it makes sense that they would try a crossover between other shows as well — maybe with some that aren't even connected through a shared universe. As it turns out, the idea for this sort of crossover had been thrown around before, and would have brought #Supernatural and #Smallville together from an epic crossover!

Former Production Assistant Tells Of The Crossover That Never Was
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jackson Stewart — a former production assistant on Supernatural — recalled the concept of a crossover between Supernatural and Smallville:
"There was a lot of really cool ideas that some of the writers had."
He spoke of the plot line that would bring these two long running shows together, in a way that would make sense for both shows:
"They had an episode where they really wanted to do a Superman curse that was about every actor who plays Superman ends up getting killed. So they find out that Tom Welling from 'Smallville' is next and have to save him. I thought that was one of the funniest ideas that I’d heard."

A Supernatural Smallville
This crossover would've had fans of both shows squealing with delight. It is of note that this would not be the first time Supernatural has done something meta. Through the course of the show's 12 seasons on air, they have had a few "meta" episodes where they poke fun at themselves and the network as well. It would make perfect sense to bring these two juggernauts together, and have them play off each other.
Supernatural star Jensen Ackles, was actually a cast member of Smallville in the fourth season, where he played Jason Teague, a Smallville High football coach. They could make a reference to this, it would be similar to when the Winchesters drove past the Stars Hollow set in the episode "Hollywood Babylon" — a nod to the fact that Jared Padalecki played Dean on #GilmoreGirls. Supernatural even had an episode where they were sent to a world where they played the actor versions of themselves — a show, inside a show, inside a show!
Smallville could explain the crossover away easily. The show being a based of the Superman lore gives them the leeway to explain any odd occurrence pretty easily. A throwaway line referring to an "alternate dimension" would get the job done quite nicely. It would have been a real treat to see Clark Kent join in on the adventures of the Winchester brothers, seeing as Superman is vulnerable to magic, there would have been actual stakes involved.
What The Future Holds
Sadly, Smallville has been over for quite some time now, so we won't get this particular crossover. However, Supernatural is still going strong, and could crossover with some of our new heroes (fingers crossed). The recent #Arrowverse crossover has taught us that anything is possible on The CW shows — seeing as last year we thought #Supergirl wasn't connected to the Arrowverse at all!
The CW has never been shy about poking fun at itself, or its characters, for the enjoyment of the fans. This fact opens the door for Supernatural to interact with the Arrowverse in some shape or form. The likeliness that this could actually happen might be slim, but like we said before, anything is possible. While we wait for more crossover goodness, be sure to check out Supernatural, Thursdays on The CW 9PM/ET, and the entire series of Smallville streaming on Hulu!
