When an amateur director makes a movie that is now known as the "Citizen Kane of bad movies," the last thing one would expect the film to attract is a loyal fanbase and a biopic about the director. But such is the case for Tommy Wiseau, the director, producer, writer and star of the cult-hit The Room, which in turn is the basis for the upcoming biopic about his life, The Disaster Artist.

More than a decade after The Room first hit cinemas, the story behind the cult-favorite's creation is about to be shown to general audiences around the world through a film that was directed by its star, James Franco.

"What A Story, Mark!"

Based on the book of the same name by The Room star Greg Sestero, The Disaster Artist tells the story of when he made his directorial debut with . The adaptation is expected to be loyal to its source material, showing the troubled filming of The Room, the difficulties Sestero and Wiseau experienced when they struggled to break into Hollywood, and the strange friendship that the two share up until today. Watch the official trailer below!

The Disaster Artist will also shed some light on the creative process behind The Room, which would give fans a backstory to their favorite moments from the movie such as the strange dialogue, the fan-interpretation that Johnny is an all-American vampire, and the sex scene between Johnny (Tommy Wiseau) and Lisa (Juliette Danielle) – where Johnny "aimed a bit too high."

Filmed like an inspirational biopic about a heartwarming rags-to-riches story, The Disaster Artist will show Wiseau's rise to unconventional fame in the most delightful way it could. The Disaster Artist has enjoyed early critical buzz and even some serious Oscar attention when it was screened earlier this year in some film festivals. Not only does The Disaster Artist currently sit at a strong 93% approval rating in Rotten Tomatoes, but it received a standing ovation when it was shown at the South by Southwest film festival, with some saying that the movie marks a career-best for Franco.

The Disaster Artist was directed by its star , who will play Tommy Wiseau a.ka. Johnny. The movie also stars Dave Franco as Greg Sestero a.k.a Mark, Ari Graynor as Juliette Danielle a.k.a. Lisa, Josh Hutcherson as Philip Haldiman a.k.a. Denny, and Seth Rogen as The Room script supervisor Sandy Schklair. The Disaster Artist will first see a limited release on December 1, 2017 before its wide theatrical release on December 8, 2017.
