In the sort of news that will horrify box office purists the world over, it seems that one of the modern world's most '80s-like movie franchises — and, of late, one of its least profitable in the United States — will be heading back to theaters in the near future. That's right, fight fans, franchise is set to continue in the near future, despite the third installment in the series only making a paltry $39 million at the US box office. It seems that the film's far stronger foreign haul of $175 million has proven decisive, though, as THR is now reporting that is not only underway, but has already managed to have its German rights sold.

There might just be a grey cloud on that particular horizon, though. Y'see...

'The Expendables 4' Is Happening, But It'll Be The Franchise's Finale

Yup, that's right. It seems that and co. will be using The Expendables 4 as a last hurrah or sorts, with the film's anticipated 2018 release set to mark the end of a franchise that has more or less run the gamut of popular opinion and box office fortune. Where once it looked set to become a shiny new mega-franchise, The Expendables 3's box office frailty back in 2014 looked to have killed the series off for good.

That, though, never quite seemed to be Stallone's style — this is Rocky Balboa we're talking about, after all — making this final comeback perhaps a little less surprising than it might otherwise have been. Whether it proves a happy reunion — either within the film, or at the box office — very much remains to be seen. After all, the film hasn't even begun production yet.
