The Flash Season 3 is in its final stretch, and Savitar has become the focal point of the show. He’s by far the most tenacious villain that Team Flash has ever faced, and he is always 10 steps ahead. He knows Team Flash intimately – most likely because he was once a member of the team – and he will stop at nothing to make sure Barry Allen suffers.

Fans have been speculating around the clock about Savitar's identity, and the consensus seems to be that Savitar is one of three characters: H.R., Cisco, or Barry from the future. Each one of these three theories have solid reasoning behind them based on clues from the show. As fans, we feel pretty certain that it is one of these characters, but Barry Allen himself, Grant Gustin, recently threw a wrench in things.

Grant Gustin And Danielle Panabaker Speak About Savitar's Identity

During a recent set visit from TV Line, stars Grant Gustin (Barry Allen) and Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow) were asked about the identity of , and when he might be unmasked. Danielle Panabaker had this to say regarding when Team Flash might find out Savitar’s identity:

“Slowly, different characters are going to learn who Savitar is, but I don’t know if the audience is going to be told anytime soon.”

While Ms. Panabaker was cryptic and vague, she did let us know that members of Team Flash are going to learn who Savitar is individually. While this is interesting, Grant Gustin's comments seem to hint that fans have no idea who Savitar is, and the reveal will leave them in a state of shock:

“It’s not the same as past reveals, with Zoom and Reverse-Flash, the audience was starting to realize things before we all started to piece it together. But I don’t know how you would know this year. And when you do find out, it’s like, ‘Oh. My. God!’ There are really no secrets or hints leading up to to it.”

Gustin’s comments are very interesting, and basically hint that the Savitar reveal will be a twist that no one could have anticipated. His comments certainly make it seem like any apparent breadcrumb trails of clues we've seen so far are irrelevant. So if we take Gustin’s comments at face value, could all the fan theories be wrong? And if that’s the case, then who could Savitar be?

How Do Grant Gustin's Comments Affect All The Savitar Theories?

Grant Gustin’s comments affect some of the theories, but certainly not all of them. If the twist really is as big of a surprise as he says, we can rule out H.R. off the bat. The theory does have its merits, but another incarnation of Harrison Wells has already been the Big Bad, and it would be a super obvious reveal. The fan reaction would be: “Wells? Again?”, and that certainly doesn't seem to fit in with Gustin's comments.

It could still be Wally West, who has been leaning down a darker path this season – mostly with his inner struggles and butting heads with Barry on several occasions. This reveal wouldn’t be “out of left field”, but would still be mildly shocking – especially when they get in to the reasons why he became Savitar. Overall, Wally West could be Savitar, but it’s not likely.

The Future Flash theory is certainly still in play, it is also the most popular theory among fans. If Savitar takes off his helmet and he is an older , people would be shocked, mostly because our hero would also would be his own greatest villain. There are plenty of clues suggesting future Barry Allen under the mask, and it would be an awesome reveal. While the Future Flash theory is the most likely, given Gustin’s comments, it isn’t as solid as a theory as it once was.

If Savitar Isn't Who The Fans Think It Is, Then Who Is it?

We must recognize that Savitar might be the person we least suspect. If The Flash writers really wanted to surprise us, they’d choose someone that would float under our suspicions for most of the season. While these next two people I suggest may sound crazy, I’m going off Grant Gustin’s comments, so hold onto your butts – and you have my permission to tell me it can’t be them in comments section.

Joe West would be the craziest surprise, mostly because he has been the rock for Team Flash, and has never faltered, no matter how many of his kids are in danger. He isn’t imbued with the Speed Force, but that can be explained away in a few lines. The only real point of contention is why he'd kill Iris, his own daughter.

Iris West has been portrayed this season as the person that Savitar is inevitably going to kill. Savitar has already said that she must die so that he can live (there can only be one, Highlander!). If Savitar is Iris, that would be a huge shock to fans – maybe even the biggest shock in the show’s history. This twist would need a lot of explanation, but could be really cool if it is handled the right way.

Both suggestions are bonkers, but that is exactly what I was going for. There is a chance that it is someone from the past or future, such as Bart Allen or Eddie Thawne, but at this point we don’t know. When it comes down to it, even though Grant Gustin says there are no clues, I believe he might be underestimating how adept fans are at figuring out who’s under the mask.

In any case, most fans are still going to stick to their Savitar theories no matter what. Grant Gustin’s comments only deepen our search for Savitar’s identity, and take us down avenues that are less obvious – no matter how crazy. You can catch The Flash on Tuesday’s 8PM/ET on The CW.
