(Disclaimer: Spoilers for The Flash Season 3 Episode 13 below. Continue at your own risk!)
The Flash is halfway through Season 3 and continues to prove itself as one of the best superhero shows on television. The show has explored many elements from DC Comics, and thanks to Team Flash's discovery of the multiverse, tons of new characters have been introduced. However, there are still a certain group of fan-favorite heroes that have not been introduced: The Batman Family.
#TheFlash, Arrow, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow have all hinted at the existence of the Dark Knight, but we have yet to have him mentioned by name. The CW tends to shy away from any direct confirmation that Batman or his extensive family of heroes exist in the Arrowverse, but this could change as the shows evolve. Given a certain Easter Egg in a recent episode of The Flash, it looks like The CW might be preparing to introduce a fan-favorite character to the #Arrowverse: Nightwing.
The Nightwing Easter Egg In 'Attack On Gorilla City'
The Flash Season 3 Episode 13 was the first part of Gorilla Grodd’s plot to bring Central City to its knees, and it delivered on almost every level. We got to a better look at Gorilla City on Earth 2 – although the episode did spend a lot of time with Team Flash in cages – and we were introduced to Grodd’s rival, Solivar.

Given all the excitement during the episode, it would have been easy for a reference about Nightwing to go unnoticed; however, being the uber-nerd that I am, my ears perked up at the sound of a very familiar city. Before Team Flash embarks on their multi-Earth field trip, Julian arrives to Star Labs dressed as Indiana Jones, and drops this little line of dialogue:
I spoke with Captain Singh, he thinks we're at a morphology conference up in Bludhaven.
Could Nightwing Come To The Arrowverse?
As many comic book fans will already know, Bludhaven is the home to the fan-favorite character #Nightwing. The city and hero are synonymous with each other — much like Gotham City and Batman, or Superman and Metropolis. This is not the first time that a reference to Bludhaven has been made. In fact, Arrow used the city as a hiding place for Roy Harper after he decided to leave Star City during Season 3.
This reference to Nightwing’s city could be a fun little Easter Egg as a nod to fans, but the writers of all four shows in the Arrowverse tend to be very deliberate. Arrow teased the existence of Ra’s and Talia Al Ghul for a long time, and they have both made their debut on the show. Superman made his debut on Supergirl at the beginning of Season 2, after the first season firmly established his existence on Supergirl's earth.
Barring Nightwing appearing in a DCEU film, it is highly probable that Nightwing could make an appearance in the Arrowverse. The argument could be made that Nightwing would upstage Green Arrow — given that Arrow has borrowed a lot from the #Batman lore — but as Supergirl proved with arrival of Superman, this doesn't have to be the case. Nightwing would be a great addition to the ever-expanding roster of characters in the Arrowverse, and his appearance would make fans extremely happy.
Fans Want To See Nightwing In The Arrowverse
We don’t know if Bludhaven being mentioned on The Flash is a sign that Nightwing is coming to the Arrowverse, but we do know that the fans took notice of this particular Easter egg. Right After 'Attack on Gorilla City' aired, fans hopped on Twitter to voice their opinions on the Nightwing Easter egg:
Twitter was filled with fans who were overjoyed by the Bludhaven Easter Egg. There were literally hundreds of tweets all expressing fans' desire for Nightwing to come to the Arrowverse. The funny thing is that they only mentioned Nightwing’s city on The Flash; imagine the fan reaction if they brought Dick Grayson on one of the shows. This last tweet is one of the few that comments on The CW shows teasing superheroes and not following through:
When it comes down to it, The CW would be foolish if they didn’t introduce Dick Grayson/Nightwing into the Arrowverse. The fans are basically begging for them to do it, and it is hard to think of any downside to him making an appearance. The mention of Bludhaven makes it seem like The CW has a plan for Nightwing’s future, and we can’t wait to see how everything pans out. You can catch The Flash on Tuesdays 8PM/ET on The CW.
