The Big Lebowski star Jeff Bridges has been working for almost 20 years to bring Lois Lowry's The Giver to the big screen. After pitches after pitches and numerous rejections, Harvey Weinstein finally agreed to take on the project.
With that in mind, and with Bridges on board, The Giver ain't just gonna be another badly-produced YA schlock flick. Oh, no. This one's for real.
The movie imagines a future society where members are appeased into being content by an agreement to adhere to 'Sameness', or the ability to ignore all painful and disruptive emotions. Jeff Bridges plays the titular Giver, an elder who's allowed to lie and cheat to share pre-Sameness facts with the Receiver of Memory (Brenton Thwaites), a young apprentice who must know the truth to be able to avert catastrophe.
