Director of all three big-screen adaptions of 's The Hobbit, revealed not long ago that in contrast to An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be pretty "serious stuff".

Well, judging by the most recent clip we've seen for the upcoming movie, Jackson wasn't lying. The clip - which aired at the MTV Europe Music Awards - shows us an ominous foreshadowing of the apocalyptic trilogy, which reveals 's Smaug as a perfect balance of light and dark.

With lines like "death is upon you, the flames of war are upon you", it's not hard to recognize the darkness that Jackson was going for; whether or not this will please fans of Tolkien's modest 300-page novel remains to be seen. Either way, after watching this, I suspect that there will no longer be any lingering doubts from cynics about his vision for The Hobbit.

What do you think of the new, darker Hobbit clip? Are you looking forward to Jackson's next installment?
