Don't let anyone ever tell you New Zealand doesn't know how to market the release of a major blockbuster movie. Whereas some films would go for gaudy merchandise or billboards, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has kept it philatelic with a set of Hobbit stamps and coins. Aww, hells yeah! Now, we're talking! Kids love stamps these days!
The New Zealand Post has commissioned a series of stamps and coins showing off The Hobbit characters sharing space with good ol' Queen Liz. , who plays new character Tauriel in 's sequel, was particularly over the moon, stating:
I have so much love for New Zealand and so I’m honoured that she is showing me such love.
As well as Tauriel, there are stamps and official legal tender featuring the visages of Bilbo (), Gandalf (), Thorin Oakenshield (), Bard (), Legolas (), Smaug () and more.
This year's issue includes a premium gold coin and set, a silver coin with gold plating, a silver coin set, and a 'brilliant' uncirculated coin and set as well as official stamps. Take a look at some of them below:
