After finally seeing the acclaimed Netflix romantic comedy, which earned an 88 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, it's safe to say that the The Incredible Jessica James is deserving of its praise. The film follows Jessica James, an eccentric playwright played by Jessica Williams living in new York, as she struggles to rebound from a breakup while anxiously waiting for her big break in the theater world at the same time.
While it is short and sweet with a mere runtime of 83 minutes, the film is extremely sincere and heartwarming. From the story to the overall message and even the smallest of character interactions, Jessica James is a film with a vast amount of heart. Here are a few ways the quirky and obscure rom-com manages to be one of the most delightful and relatable pictures of the year.
1. Incorporation Of Social Media Makes For A Realistically Modern Story
What Jessica James did very well was modernize the story by incorporating different social media, which helps audiences relate to the film. Jessica's first attempt to bounce back from her breakup is by going on a date with a guy that she met on Tinder, hoping that her ex shows up and sees them together. In one short conversation during her date, Jessica provides a critique on dating services and then calls out the ridiculousness in the hookup culture that is quite popular among young adults in their twenties.
Instagram is also featured in the film when Jessica is stressing over when to unfollow an ex, which shows us just how much social media has become a huge part of relationships and daily life. The film also shows the fun part of social media by highlighting topics such as Instagram food photography accounts.
By putting an emphasis on apps like Tinder and Instagram, The Incredible Jessica James is a much more believable story that also gives some witty commentary on today's society and its adoration of social media.
2. It Shows Off The Ups And The Downs Of Everyday Life
Throughout the film, almost every part of Jessica's day-to-day life is put on display, both the fun and the not-so-fun parts. We see Jessica find joy in teaching kids in public school how to write and produce plays. However, at the same time, we see Jessica's disappointment when theater companies seem to constantly reject her work.
Viewers also get a glimpse of Jessica's family life, seeing her parents and sister's excitement at her visit, but the film also gives the audience a look at Jessica's loneliness when with her family because of how different she is from them.
The movie contains a very balanced contrast of positives and negatives that Jessica experiences, which creates a portrayal of life that anybody can relate to.
3. Jessica James Is Unabashedly Herself
The intriguing thing about the title character in this movie is that no matter what, she always tries her hardest to simply be herself. She embraces everything about herself, from her unrequited love of theater to her incredible forwardness and shameless use of cliche phrases such as "basic af."
What makes the character so endearing is her overwhelming confidence. One scene in particular that really highlights her brashness features Jessica wildly dancing around her apartment complex, unafraid of what her neighbors may think of her.

Her boldness also makes for some pretty hilarious banter between her and her love interest, Boone (played by Chris O'Dowd), and her spunky best friend Tasha, brilliantly played by Noël Wells.
Although she is a happy and confident person, Jessica also has her flaws. She speaks before she thinks and can let her emotions get the best of her, which leads to mistakes being made. However, she realizes what she did wrong and owns up to it, showing us a solid morality that we can all look up to.
Jessica's honest efforts to stay true to herself also makes her extremely relatable since it appeals to many people's desire to be comfortable in their own skin.
Thanks to its excellent incorporation of social media, honest portrayal of normal life and an outstanding protagonist, The Incredible Jessica James is a heartfelt and straightforward film that anyone can identify with, and is simply a delight to watch.
