The Incredibles director Brad Bird released some info about the long-awaited sequel at D23, revealing that the story will pick up right after the events of the first film and will place the titular family into an expanded universe that includes new allies and a brand-new villain.

During the panel at , Bird had this to say regarding the highly-anticipated sequel:

“‘Incredibles 2’ is really a family film, it’s just that the family happens to have super powers. They may have super speed or super strength, but they experience the same problems as any family.”

Bird also announced that the team dynamic would change, and Mr. Incredible would no longer be leading the team. At first this idea seemed strange — however, Bird explained that Mr. Incredible would be stepping down as team leader to stay home to take care of everyone’s favorite superhero baby, Jack Jack.

Since Mr. Incredible will be taking on the role of a stay-at-home father, his wife, Elastigirl, will be leading the family team in the fight against crime. During the panel at D23, Elastigirl herself, , joked about the her new role on the team for Incredibles 2:

“Bob’s actually home with the kids this time and I’m the one out fighting crime. I’ve been working out 13 hours a day!”

While this change isn’t something that will rock the foundation of the team, it’s something that shows the type of relationship shared between the heads of the family. At their core, the Incredibles are a family, and much like real families, they are about partnership and sharing responsibilities.

The Incredibles 2 is less than a year away from release, and with Brad Bird hard at work on the film, we are sure to get more information – and maybe even a first look – in the coming months. When it’s all said and done, we are all excited that the sequel is on its way, and we know that it'll have been worth the 14-year wait.

The Incredibles 2 will star Criag T. Nelson (Mr. Incredible), Holly Hunter (Elastigirl), Sarah Vowell (Violet), Huck Milner (Dash) and Samuel L. Jackson (Frozone), when it hits theaters on June 15, 2018.
