One of the most influential and beloved queer dramas is making a long-awaited comeback. A sequel to The L Word is currently in the works, and will return to its original home at Showtime. The cast and crew recently revealed they would be open to revisiting the show, but none of us imagined that we would receive news so soon.
Reportedly, the network is searching for a new writer for the sequel series, specifically someone with ties to the lesbian community. Original showrunner Ilene Chaiken will be on board as executive producer.
Also attached to executive produce are the actresses of fan-favorite characters: Jennifer Beals (Bette), Kate Moennig (Shane) and Leisha Hailey (Alice). The trio will appear in the reboot as their respective characters, but only to bridge the introduction of a new ensemble of ladies.
The L Word initially ran from 2004 to 2009 with six triumphant seasons. It has a dedicated following to this day, and continues to remind us how much #LGBT representation matters. We can only hope the revival will be as groundbreaking as when it first aired.
Keep your eyes open for more news on The L Word sequel, which has no title or release date as of yet.
