Two years ago, Star Wars: The Force Awakens introduced fans to a brand new set of characters, expanding the Galaxy Far, Far Away. One of those characters was the most mysterious of them all, Rey, who seemed to have a unique relationship with the Force. And now Luke Skywalker is her mentor.

Transitioning to the next installment in the franchise, The Last Jedi, we have already seen in the first trailer that her training will begin, with several scenes of Rey learning the ways of the Force as Luke looks on. Now we are only four months away from the sequel, with bits and pieces of images dropping here and there over the internet. One such image was just released by Yahoo! Movies, showing off Rey in an image of her training. Check it out below:

What's interesting about this photo is it shows something that we haven't seen in any of the other footage of Rey training. In everything else, we have seen her with a lightsaber, or just using the Force. But in this image, we see her using her staff, which she used for the majority of The Force Awakens.

This may tie into a theory that has been going around about Rey's staff. The theory is that instead of simply using Luke's lightsaber, she will go on to use the staff as a lightsaber instead.

While that may seem farfetched, there is a logical explanation behind it. If you look at Rey's staff, you may notice pieces similar to those on the hilts of other lightsabers. Rey could have constructed the staff out of scraps of lighsabers that she found, and it is also safe to assume that those parts could in the end make up a working lighsaber.

Not only would this set Rey apart from other Jedi, it would be something that we have honestly never seen before in the movies. While it is true that we have seen some Jedi with a staff lightsaber in cartoons, comics and video games, it has never been seen on the big screen.

But regardless of whether or not she uses the staff as a lightsaber, it doesn't take the Force to sense that we will see Rey come to learn how to use her full power in The Last Jedi. While there has been panic that it will be like Empire Strikes Back, it is safe to assume that the movie will not only its own thing, but an exciting chapter in the Star Wars universe.

So what do you think? Are you excited for The Last Jedi? Do you think Rey will use her staff as a lightsaber? Sound off in the comments below!
