As the astute philosophers of The Wu-Tang Clan observed, cash indeed rules everything around me. What is the latest supporting evidence of such a claim? The Nut Job is getting a sequel.

According to Deadline, the indie animated film distributed by Open Road opened so well that The Nut Job 2 has been planned for January of 2016. In fact The Nut Job broke the record for best debut from an animated film made outside the studio system. Talks have already begun with various members of the cast and crew, but at this point no one is officially signed to return.

In the movie business, there is always plenty of accounting going on behind the scenes, but obviously there is something to be said for low budget, high returns. I get why this movie is being sequelized from a financial standpoint, but I can only hope the second installment gets a bit more effort put forth into its script.

What do you guys think?
