The Vampire Diaries spin-off The Originals technically debuted in a 'backdoor pilot' episode shown in the last season of The Vampire Diaries. However, it will now get its own official premiere to kick off the first season of The Originals.

According to Zap2It, the new episode is expected to be filmed in summer and will continue what occurred in the pilot episode. This means everything which happened in the pilot (Klaus' return to New Orleans, his conflict with Marcel and Hayley's pregnancy) will still be part of the separate, but intertwined, Original's universe. The purpose of the premiere is to move these plots forward and establish them with viewers unfamiliar with The Vampire Diaries.

The premiere will also introduce a new character, Davina, played by . The character, who is a New Orlean's witch, was expected to arrive in the pilot, although her part was cut in editing.

There's still no word on when we can expect to catch the new spin-off series, but with filming commencing in March, I can image some serious progress has already been made.

What do you think? What did you think of the backdoor pilot? Are you glad it was picked up for a series? Let me know below.
