Calvin Reeder's short film The Procedure achieves more in four minutes than most films do in over 2 hours, eliciting varied reactions of shock, horror or joy depending on your disposition. However, the true impact of this award-winning film is best experienced without prior knowledge, so we're reluctant to reveal much more than that.

Regardless of taste though, we can guarantee that The Procedure will stay with you long after the credits have rolled, whether you want it to or not, so what are you waiting for? Grab yourself an empty room in the office, close the curtains and let the bizarre freakiness of this short wash over you in all its' glory.

WARNING — The Procedure contains graphic imagery that some viewers may find disturbing... but it's also strangely hilarious, so proceed at your own risk:

Still confused? Shocked? Giggling like a small child who just heard the world's best fart joke? You're not alone, but fortunately, director Calvin Reeder shed some light on The Procedure in an interview with Vimeo, who showcased the short on their site after it won Sundance's Short Film Jury Award for U.S Fiction.

Discussing the inspiration behind The Procedure, Reeder explained to Vimeo that;

“This isn’t something that comes premeditated, it just clicked. I just told [my girlfriend] and she was…appalled but also laughing and then it just kinda continued into the next day. Y’know, just the idea…Then, I started sending it to my friends and they responded to it really well just on the naked page. I was pretty excited by their reactions because I knew we had something.”

With only two actors on set, the crew behind The Procedure was understandably limited;

"We did a Kickstarter for two films and I don’t remember exactly what the budget was but it was low, we only raised about $10,000 on the Kickstarter for two films. There were under ten people on the crew, possibly eight."

However, the only thing that viewers really want to know though is whether that certain something was real or just the result of some hardcore CGI and the answer is;

"It’s real!"

There you have it, guys. Has anyone else suffered for their art more than Christian Palmer, the film's producer who was forced to lie on that table and literally take one for the team?

Whether you watched through shaking fingers or fits of unexpected laughter, it's easy to see why Reeder's film did so well at Sundance this year. After all, the subject matter may scream shock value, but when you break it down, The Procedure is in fact a masterclass of expert editing and direction, squeezing every drop of tension possible from such a short running time. Just don't hold your breath for a sequel. Hold your breath if someone tries to reenact the film in real life instead,
