said at one point, the one thing that ultimately made him sign on to direct The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was Mitty-screenwriter Steven Conrad's statement that ‘inside the breasts of every American man beats the heart of a hero.’

While that might (hopefully) be true, I would like to suggest that in a certain American's breast, namely 's, sleeps a great director. After Reality Bites, the underrated Cable Guy and Tropic Thunder, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty seems to be Stiller's most ambitious and heartfelt movie, at least if this gorgeous trailer is anything to go by.

There seems to be a heavy dose of Forrest Gump-esque grandeur, mixed with the melancholy indie mood à la Where the Wild Things Are in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

Hopefuly it turns out as good this trailer suggests.

In case you're wondering: the song in the trailer is “Dirty Paws” by Of Monsters and Men.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty opens December 25.

Here's the synopsis:

Ben Stiller directs and stars in THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY, James Thurber’s classic story of a day-dreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job along with that of his co-worker (Kristen Wiig) are threatened, Walter takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.
