After an eight-year run, The Vampire Diaries has come to an end. Although many would argue that it has been a long time coming, we cannot deny that this show has captivated us from the very first moment it aired on all the way back in 2009.

From the love triangles and brotherly conflicts to witches and the devil himself, the show hasn't failed to deliver Fridays full of drama and intrigue as the protagonists try to find their happy ending. After eight full years of biting us right in the feels, it's time to pay a tribute to all the things we'll miss now that is coming to a close.

1. Damon Salvatore's Smirk

Damon (Ian Somerhalder), a.k.a. the reckless Salvatore brother, might be one of the best things about the show. His wit and his deathly smirk have made our hearts leap a few too many times over the years.

2. The Great Soundtrack

From day one, the show's soundtrack has been able to add another layer of intensity to its already emotional scenes. It's safe to say that The Vampire Diaries would not be the same without its impactful soundtrack. Not only has the music moved fans, but many claim that they have discovered some great tunes through the show.

3. Elena And Damon's Epic Romance

Although Stelena shippers might not be on board with this one, the truth is that Elena and Damon's love has had a pretty epic ride. Elena and Damon's relationship has had many bumps to say the least but it's obvious that these two are soulmates. After eight years of obstacles, the series finale holds the answer to the ending of this epic love story; let's hope it'll be a happy ending.

4. Bonnie Bennett's Badass Magic

Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) is the strongest character on The Vampire Diaries. She has grown and evolved more than any other character on the show, as she has fought through losing her magic, dying, being trapped in a parallel world, sacrificing herself countless times, losing the love of her life — the list goes on. Bonnie and her badass magic — which has probably rescued everyone on the show — will be deeply missed.

5. The Salvatore Brothers

The relationship between the brothers might be the most complex one on the show. This last season has delved deeper than before into this love-hate relationship between them, showing just how deep their guilt runs. Despite both of them making each other's lives miserable on multiple occasions through the centuries, there's nothing that the brothers wouldn't do for one another.

6. All The Doppelgängers

The Vampire Diaries has made us into doppelgänger experts. brought to life four versions of the same character: Amara, Tatia, and more importantly, Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce. Paul Wesley also got to briefly portray Stefan Salvatore's doppelgängers, Silas and Tom Avery.

7. The Dark Humor

The dark humor of the show was a breath of fresh air (especially after all the drama), adding not only to the show's overall appeal but making individual characters far more fascinating.

8. Villains We Can't Help But Love

The Vampire Diaries has had a long line of antagonists. Kai Parker (Chris Wood), Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) and Katherine Pierce (to name a few) are so charismatic that even when they made everyone's life miserable, deep down we couldn't help but like them.

9. The Empowering Friendships

No matter what has come in their way, Caroline, Bonnie and Elena are bonded by their strong friendship. They always forgive and support each other. Bonnie even ended up going to Caroline's wedding, and she was marrying the man who killed Bonnie's true love, Enzo (Michael Malarkey).

10. Sheriff Forbes

Granted, Liz Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) has been dead since Season 6, but that doesn't mean we won't miss her now that the show is ending. Sheriff Forbes will always be an essential part of The Vampire Diaries, and she deserves a spot on this list.

11. Type-A Caroline Forbes

Caroline Forbes has grown since Season 1 from an insecure teen to a fearless and confident woman. She's extremely loyal to her friends and family; she would do anything for them. Nothing escapes from Caroline Forbes once she puts her mind on it.

12. All The Mystic Fall Annual Events

Speaking of Caroline Forbes, we will definitely miss all the annual events that she organized. had an abundance of seasonal events that added to the charm of the small-town lifestyle and enabled villains to spread havoc. Founder's Day celebrations, Miss Mystic Falls pageants, galas, carnival parties and decade dances are just some of the events that have taken place throughout these eight years.

13. Characters From The Past Trying To Adjust To Modern Life

Since death isn't really that permanent — at least on this show — many people from the past have been revived and asked to adjust to modern ways of living, which makes it the ultimate culture shock. When Rebekah Mikaelson (Claire Holt) was resurrected she was appalled by modern music and fashion. Lily Salvatore (Annie Wersching) had a similar experience with modern technology. And these are only two examples.

"We didn't have mobile telephones in my day. Would have made life a whole lot easier, I suppose." — Rebekah Mikaelson in "The Reckoning"

The Vampire Diaries is bowing out with a two-hour series finale event on March 10, 2017 with an one-hour look back at all eight seasons. Check out the promo below:
