Over the course of seven Seasons, Carl Grimes has survived a bullet to the face and the wrath of Negan, not to mention an entire zombie apocalypse, but the one thing that might finally bring him down is further education.

Recent rumors have suggested that may leave the world of walkers behind for Johnnie Walker whiskey at frat parties instead, despite being a key member of 's cast up to this point. Oh yeah, and this was a thing too.

Use of the hashtag "freedom" sure does imply that Riggs is keen to escape the daily grind of dystopian life, but in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Chandler may have disappointed Carl haters by revealing that he's keen to stay on the show:

"You never know how it will go. I really do hope it works out because that would be really cool. I like to be in The Walking Dead and I like to play video games and just hang out with my friends and try to be as normal as possible so going to college would be another really cool, normal experience in my life. I want for it to work out."

While it sounds like Carl's future on The Walking Dead still isn't set in stone, Riggs seems keen to continue working simultaneously at university and on the show. As the interview continues, Chandler goes on to discuss the logistics of this, suggesting that Carl could continue wearing that over-sized sheriff's hat for many more seasons to come:

"Yes. Theoretically, I could take one or two classes on campus and maybe an online class. My professors would have to be willing to cooperate. It wouldn't be easy but I think that could be possible."

However, Chandler ends the interview by casting some doubt on whether he will in fact follow through with this plan. When asked if he's signed a contract for Season 8, Riggs simply states:

"I can't answer that."

Per network obligations, it's not unusual for actors to keep the details of their contracts secret. However, what remains unclear is whether Riggs will meet his maker by the end of Season 7 or whether he's simply staying characteristically cagey about Carl's future.

While we understand that Chandler might ultimately prioritize his studies over The Walking Dead, it would certainly be a blow to the show. Regardless of whether you like his character or not, Carl remains a pivotal member of the comic's ensemble and it's hard to imagine this dystopian future without him. On the plus side though, at least there'll be more chocolate pudding to go round. Lord knows that's in short supply for Rick's merry band of survivors.
