In the least surprising but most gruesomely-brilliant news of the day, AMC's hit show The Walking Dead is getting a fourth season. AMCTV has announced that cast and crew are heading back to Atlanta on May 6th to begin production, with Season 4 set to premiere in October for a 16 episode run.

Hell yeah!

It's no great shock that a new season of the zombie apocalypse drama has been commissioned. The Walking Dead has smashed its competitors into the dust the last few months, with the mid-season premiere bringing in a ghoulishly-good 12.3 million viewers. There's television gold in them there flesh eaters.

The current season is rocketing towards its climax and the eventual showdown between the Governor and Rick, so it will be interesting to see where Season 4 takes us next. Those that have read the comics will know that after the prison a major city on the East Coast becomes the focus for the survivors, but with the cast and crew heading to Atlanta for filming, perhaps something different is in store for us.

The Walking Dead returns Sunday, 9/8c on AMC.
