The Walking Dead has had its fair share of plot holes and inconsistencies throughout the years. Since none have affected the storyline in any major way, fans have been more than happy to overlook them and continue enjoying Rick & co.'s fight for survival. But fans have finally come across one glaring error too egregious to overlook: Maggie's pregnancy.
Back in 2015, during the show's sixth season, Maggie made the surprising revelation that she was pregnant. Fans were excited by the prospect of a new character joining the survivor family, and we wasted no time in speculating how the baby would play into the story. Little did we know that our journey to meet the infant was going to be anything but easy.
Season 7 came and went, and Maggie wasn't showing. It was a bit strange, but as #LaurenCohan explained to Entertainment Weekly, only a few weeks had passed since Glenn had met his maker at that point:
"I always want to put a little ticker tape along the bottom of the episode saying how far into the apocalypse and into the pregnancy we are. Because I'm playing newly pregnant for a really long time. But the truth of the matter is, it's only been a matter of weeks since Negan killed Glenn."
To the dismay of viewers, though, the confusion didn't stop there. Cohan's explanation seemed to make sense at first, but it completely fell apart after the Season 8 premiere. In the episode, audiences caught a glimpse of Judith as she was painting on the street. The girl was no longer a baby like she was in Season 6 and 7, but a toddler.
People Are Having A Hard Time Understanding This Pregnancy
Viewers have been completely confused as to why there's no sign of Maggie's pregnancy yet, despite the fact that Judith is so big now and they shared their confusion on social media:
Let's try to figure this out...
What's Going On With Maggie's Baby?
This will sound weird, but #TWD's glaring timeline mishap isn't necessarily on Maggie, but on Judith. Indeed, only a few weeks have passed from the events of Season 6 to where we are now. Looking at the matter that way, Maggie not showing a baby bump yet is somewhat understandable. The real problem is with how much older Judith looked in the episode when compared to the Season 7 finale, despite there being that episode and the Season 8 premiere.
I'm merely speculating, but the little girl in the episode seems to be one pair of the Chloe & Sophia Garcia-Frizzi twin duo, who played Judith in Season 7. If that's the case, the sisters grew up during the show's hiatus and it showed by the time Season 8 was filmed, thus creating this whole confusion.
Ok, so Maggie's long pregnancy isn't exactly a mistake, but when will we get to meet her baby? It doesn't look like that will happen for a while. Showrunner Scott M. Gimple revealed in the same EW interview that Maggie wasn't going to give birth during Season 8, so it looks like she'll be pregnant for the foreseeable future.
Who knows? Perhaps the baby won't come into the world until Season 9.
What do you think is going on with Maggie's mysterious pregnancy? Is this is just a simple continuity mishap from the people behind The Walking Dead? Let me know in the comments!
