(WARNING: Spoilers for The Walking Dead up until Season 7. You've been warned)
Since we're seven seasons into The Walking Dead, I was thinking (always a dangerous proposition) that some of the characters' apocalypse experiences are definitely worse than others. And it seems like the women on the show have it much worse than the men. So, with that in mind, I decided to rate the misery index of the top four ladies of #TheWalkingDead. Here we go!
A lot of Michonne's heartache came at the beginning of the outbreak when her lover, Mike, and his friend, Terry, were high at the refugee camp where they were living, and were unable to defend her baby Andre, who was killed by walkers. Mike and Terry were bitten, but Michonne did not grant them mercy. Instead, she chopped off their arms and mouths, using them as cover so she could walk among the dead untouched.
Bitter and alone, she finally found Rick's group, and gradually regained her humanity. She bonded with Andrea, only to lose her best friend to the Governor's evil torture.
The death was tragic (even though I really hated Andrea!), and Michonne took it hard.
Ever the stoic warrior, she pressed on, becoming a guiding force within the crew and a trusted adviser to Rick. Her heart gradually opened, and now that she has a romantic relationship with Rick, in addition to a loving mother/son dynamic with Carl. Her apocalypse is not so bad right now (relatively speaking, of course).
Michonne's Misery Index:
- Child killed
- Lover killed
- Best friend committed suicide
Carol Peletier had it rough at the beginning, too, what with being beaten by her abusive hubby Ed, and having her daughter Sophia wander away from the group during a walker attack. The crew spends half the season searching for Sophia, only to find her in Hershel's barn:
Arguably the most heartbreaking scene up to that point in The Walking Dead, Sophia's death devastates Carol. Gradually, she becomes much stronger, developing into one of the most changed characters in the show's history. She rises to be a fierce leader and a master strategist, even to the point of killing sick members of the group at the prison to stem a deadly virus outbreak.
Carol opens her heart to Lizzie and her sister Mika, essentially adopting them. Then, in another shocking plot twist, she discovers that Lizzie is psychotic, not able to tell the difference between humans and walkers.
Carol's execution of Lizzie is one of the most shocking and heart-wrenching scenes ever in #TheWalkingDead, and Melissa McBride does an amazing job.
All of the killings begin to wear on Carol, and she decides to run away from the group. She develops a death wish, but is saved by Morgan. Now at the Kingdom, she appears to be more at peace with her place in the post-apocalyptic world.
Carol's Misery Index:
- Husband dead
- Daughter killed
- Adoptive daughter murdered
- Forced to kill adoptive daughter
Sasha Williams was a latecomer to the series, joining the show with her brother, Tyreese, during Season 3. Her bad times began with the death of her boyfriend, Bob, whose leg was chopped off and eaten by Gareth and the Termites. Bob is returned to the group near death, and this sad, touching scene follows:
Bob was always an optimistic influence on Sasha, so his death sent her into a severe depression. Very soon after, Tyreese was killed in a walker attack, and his tragic death sent Sasha into a deadly PTSD mindset. She began acting out in a very violent and self-destructive way.
Abraham pulled Sasha out of her spiral, and they eventually developed a romantic relationship. Abe's brutal murder at the hands of Negan sent Sasha into a murderous revenge mode again. Right now, Sasha is in a very dark place, so her future remains uncertain.
Sasha's Misery Index:
- Boyfriend murdered
- Brother killed
- Second boyfriend murdered
Boy, oh boy, has anyone had it worse than Maggie? Wow. Things started well enough, with her romance with Glenn, but things went straight to the crapper soon after.
First, she witnesses her father Hershel murdered in brutal fashion by the Governor:
That was clearly the most heinous murder on the show to that point, only to be exceeded by Negan in Season 7.
Not long after, her sister Beth goes missing, and dies in a rescue attempt by the crew at a local hospital.
The gut-wrenching death of her sister completely breaks Maggie, and the only one holding her together is the love of her life, Glenn. But we all know what happens next:
WARNING: THE CLIP THAT FOLLOWS IS EXTREMELY GRAPHIC:
Add to that the fact that Maggie was near death from a horrific pregnancy complication, so it's a miracle that she not only survived, but is more determined than ever to avenge Glenn's murder and bring a better life to the remaining survivors.
Maggie's Misery Index:
- Father murdered
- Sister murdered
- Husband murdered
