For a show based entirely around the premise of resurrection, there sure are a lot of permanent deaths in The Walking Dead, which critics of the show argue have taken precedent over fundamental elements such as pacing and character development.

However, whether you're loving everything about Season 7 or joined the hordes of viewers who stopped watching, there's something undeniably exciting about the idea of seeing Rick's survivors stop... well, surviving.

Understandably then, the cast and crew work diligently to ensure that future deaths on are kept secret to avoid spoilers and the subsequent fan outrage. However, in a new interview with Conan O'Brien, series creator Robert Kirkman accidentally revealed that he's been hinting which characters will die all along, ever since the show first aired.

Check out the full interview below:

Ironically, the discussion began when Conan asked Kirkman if he enjoyed toying with audience expectations. Of course, the sadistic creator answered in the affirmative, revealing that he takes great pleasure in throwing people off by pretending that major characters like Michonne and Rick are next to die.

However, Conan was quick to point out that this approach does in fact reveal far more than Kirkman may be willing to share with fans, suggesting that:

"In a weird way the reverse is true. If you say that, they don't die."

Kirkman quickly acknowledged this as correct, stating;

"That's the key. And I get people that are mad at me cause I poke fun like that, but I'm just like guys, I'm throwing you a bone. If I answer the question, that means that person's definitely not dying."

What this means for The Walking Dead sleuths out there is that Kirkman has actually been narrowing down the list of potential candidates for death this whole time. Ever hear Robert joke about Rick getting Lucille'd? Then he's probably safe. Did Kirkman describe Michonnes' grisly end in graphic detail? Expect her to live a long and prosperous life on the show.

Here are all the cast members who Kirkman didn't joke about before they met their untimely fate:

However, it's worth bearing in mind that Kirkman recently promised that seven staple characters would die by the time that The Walking Dead is taken off the air. The original quote named the following fan favorites as key cast members who would eventually kick the bucket;

"Rick, Carl, Michonne. In the show, Daryl Dixon, eventually Abraham, Rosita. Rosita's already dead in the comics. Jesus."

Does that mean these characters are actually safe now or is Kirkman just toying with our emotions once again? Abraham's already snuffed it, after all.

Not content with just holding control over The Walking Dead universe, Kirkman is now hellbent on manipulating the lives of real people too, teasing us with a never-ending deluge of rumors and misdirects designed to torment our tiny minds. Or, you know, he's just having fun and The Walking Dead's just a TV show. Either/or.
