After tonight's finale it's safe to say every fan is a bit shocked. The conclusion was definitely unexpected, but before we talk about the end, we need to talk about all the memorable scenes in tonight's episode.

A few stand out more than others, mainly because they were clear adaptations of moments from The Walking Dead comics. There were some slight differences in how the scenes played out in the original comics versus how they were depicted in tonight's season finale but the similarities are uncanny.

1. Dwight Attempts To Join Rick's Cause

  • Happened in: Issue 108

In #108, Dwight meets with Rick, Jesus, and Ezekiel at the Kingdom. Dwight persuades them into believing he's changed sides and no longer follows Negan.

  • How it played out in the show:

A similar scene played out in tonight's episode with Dwight attempting to convince Rick, only it was Daryl interrogating Dwight, and it was Daryl who ultimately allowed Dwight to live so that he could make good on his part of the deal—to bring Negan down.

2. Negan Attacks Alexandria

  • Happened in: Issue 119

In #119, Negan wages a full attack on Alexandria. Having learned that Rick's group of Alexandrians intended to stage a coup, Negan decided to take action himself, leading an explosive assault on Alexandria.

Unlike his prior meetings with the Alexandrians, Negan greeted them with grenades rather than menacing grins. Luckily, Negan backs off and entreats Rick to talk to him with a peace offering.

  • How it played out in the show:

Tonight's episode of played out in a similar fashion, but Negan didn't attack Alexandria's walls. Instead, Negan had Jadis' people infiltrate Alexandria and set Rick's army up. When the play was revealed, the Alexandrians were at Negan's mercy until Carol showed up with the Hilltop's people. At that point, a massive fire-fight was waged between Alexandria's united communities and the Saviors.

3. A Captive Was Returned To Alexandria...Sort Of

  • Happened in: Issue 119

Another pivotal moment from #119 came when Negan returned Holly to Alexandria. Having been captured during Rick's initial incursion on the Sanctuary, Holly was he'd captive, but at some point during her stay with the Saviors, she was killed and reanimated. Negan then used the undead Holly as a distraction during his invasion of Alexandria.

  • How it played out in the show:

In regard to how that scene was depicted in tonight's episode of The Walking Dead, there were a few key differences. For one, Holly's role from the comics was replaced by Sasha. Secondly, she didn't bite anyone from Alexandria. Instead, the tables were turned when she almost bit Negan but wasn't quick enough.

4. A Savior Falls Out Of The Bell Tower

  • Happened in: Issue 120

In #120, during Negan's invasion of Alexandria, one of his Saviors managed to sneak into the tower where Andrea was positioned with a rifle. During Rick's conversation with Negan, they notice someone fall out of the tower. They immediately assume it was Andrea but it was the Savior who ambushed Andrea.

  • How it played out in the show:

A similar scene played out in tonight's season finale, only Andrea's role from the comics was replaced by Michonne, who we can now more or less confirm is taking on Andrea's role from the comics. Especially now that Michonne has filled Andrea's role in an another iconic scene from the comics.

5. Negan Is Forced To Retreat

  • Happened in: Issue 120

#120 was quite an important issue from the "All-Out War" event, having been host to a number of memorable moments. But Negan's retreat from Alexandria was definitely a fan-favorite moment in the series.

Toward the end of the issue, Negan is forced into a retreat by Maggie and the Hilltop gang, whose arrival shortly after Negan's barrage on Alexandria appeared to be demolishing the community turned the tide of the fight against Negan and the Saviors. Negan then returns to the Sanctuary in face of his defeat. He isn't fazed by the revolt waged against him, however, inciting a call for war amongst his Saviors.

  • How it played out in the show:

Tonight's season finale of The Walking Dead played out in a similar fashion, with Negan being chased off by the Hilltop and Kingdom's soldiers. Except, Negan teased the audience with an announcement of war. Still, we'll have to wait for to premiere in October to find out what Negan has in store for his newly coined adversaries.
