Did Rick and Daryl use morse code to communicate, or was it just a particularly sunny day in ol' zombie town? When will Jesus take us to church and come out as gay on The Walking Dead? And how on earth does Negan clean all the brains and gunk out of Lucille's pointy barbed wire bits?
The Walking Dead has teased viewers with more questions than ever in Season 7, and while some have now been explained — soap, Negan uses soap — the mystery of who freed Daryl Dixon from Negan's Sanctuary still remains.
During a particularly jaunty round of 'Easy Street', an incarcerated Daryl looked up to discover that someone had slipped him a key, a match and a note saying, "Go now." While a number of weeks have passed since Daryl found freedom, we're still losing sleep over the identity of this mysterious samaritan. Fortunately, it turns out that Jesus may have finally answered our prayers.
When Will We Find Out Who Freed Daryl?
During an interview with Comicbook.com, actor Tom 'Jesus' Payne was asked whether his character was the one who freed Daryl from Negan's Sanctuary. While Tom was a bit of a Payne in this regard, refusing to answer the question directly, he did give us a little miracle by hinting that the answer will arrive soon:
"You'll discover who helped Daryl come out, that will be explained."
If Jesus was the one who slipped Daryl the key, the long-haired warrior may have come to regret that decision, due to the bloody aftermath with Fat Joe. Speaking about that infamous scene, Payne said that;
"It was a big moment for Daryl, obviously, and for Jesus to really see the pain and the suffering that he's gone through, and how he took that out on another human being. It was kind of a tough moment. You see in the scene where everyone arrives back to the Hilltop and Jesus just hung back from that whole thing and just allowed everyone to have their moment with each other because he realized that it's such a big ordeal that they'd all been through and what a big moment it was when they all get back together. He's not a guy who's gonna judge people too harshly. He just allows people whatever their journey is and whatever they need to get through it."
Jesus may have blessed us with some wonderful insights into Daryl's escape, but the questions remains; Who slipped everyone's favorite crossbow lover that sneaky key?
It's likely that Jesus was involved in Daryl's escape to some extent. After all, Tom Payne's character was there at the time — but wouldn't the two of them have mentioned this at some point? Perhaps Daryl just thanked him with a few cheeky blinks, Morse Code style. However, that still doesn't explain how Jesus would have known when Daryl was even being held? Maybe we have his powers of divination to thank for that.
Sure, Dwight wasn't exactly Daryl's biggest fan, but the scarred survivor hated Negan even more, so it's possible that he could have freed Dixon just to throw a spanner in the works. After all, the original source material from the comics does support this theory and Dwight is partial to a cigarette or two...
However, a new preview suggests that Dwight will be genuinely shocked when he discovers Daryl's empty cell — unless, of course, he's just bluffing to keep his involvement in Daryl's escape under wraps.
Dwight's ex-girlfriend held a soft spot for Daryl during his incarceration, offering him advice on how to survive his stay at Negan's Sanctuary. Sherry also possesses the knowledge necessary to put this plan together and has been show to smoke cigarettes in the past too. Perhaps she and Dwight even worked together to free Daryl, causing some chaos for their mutual enemy in the process.
Who? Yes, viewers may have forgotten Dr. Carson, as he's only played a small role on The Walking Dead so far, but crucially, his character helped free Eugene from Negan in the comics. It's entirely possible then that AMC may have adapted this aspect of the original story here, although that wouldn't be the most exciting reveal in the world.
Remember that time Joey left Daryl's cell door open? Sure, this seemed like a test of Daryl's loyalty more than anything else, but what if he genuinely wanted to free Negan's prisoner? After all, we never learned that much about his character, and he could be far nicer than anyone realized. If that's the case though, then we're pretty sure Joey immediately regretted his decision once Daryl finished bashing his head in, Lucille-style.
Negan is one manipulative son of a bitch. What if the leader of Sanctuary deliberately freed Daryl to play with his mind? Sure, this scenario is the least likely out of everything suggested so far, but we wouldn't put this kind of f**kery past #Negan, and it would certainly be an unexpected twist!

While we still don't know when the identity of Daryl's secret ally will come to light, we'd be surprised if this mystery wasn't resolved by the end of Season 7. Then again though, Rick and his jolly band of survivors do have a few other things on their mind... Let's just hope that someone like Jesus can pull off the ultimate miracle and answer every question we have about this season of The Walking Dead in one fell swoop.
