The Walking Dead's Sunday night return was filled with plenty of mystery, surprises and intrigue. Not only did the episode leave fans with more questions than answers, but they even saw a rare smile from Rick Grimes himself.

But Rick's out-of-character smile wasn't the only touching moment from the episode. Just before the credits rolled, a tribute to someone by the name of James Heltibridle was shown:

Who Is James Heltibridle?

Considering that name doesn't belong to member of 's cast, the tribute has generated an understandable amount of confusion amongst fans. Who is James Heltibridle, and what happened to him?

James Heltibridle was actually an assistant in the props department on The Walking Dead. Tragically, Heltibridle was killed in a car accident whilst driving home from the set of The Walking Dead in November 2016.

Heltibridle had previously worked as a production designer on a couple of films, including the beautifully dark short film Death and the Robot. He was a former student of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, who are accepting memorial donations for their Film Art Department in Heltibridle's name:

Touching Tributes

Those involved in the show have paid tribute to Heltibridle on social media. Amongst them is Michael Rooker, who played Daryl's brother Merle in earlier seasons. He shared the following photo of the artist:

Michael Jaegers, an actor who frequently plays a variety of walkers on The Walking Dead, described Heltibridle's death as "a real loss to TWD family". He also posted a status on his official Facebook page:

Given the spectacular special effects shown in the mid-season return of The Walking Dead season 7, it seems a fitting episode to pay tribute to the beloved artist. RIP James Heltibridle.
