The #Xmen film franchise has been all over over place the past few years, with a fun time-travel adventure movie, a spectacular origin story about a merc with a mouth and a terrible '80s apocalypse movie. The next adventure is everyone's favorite clawed mutant on a post-apocalyptic western road trip titled #Logan. More recently though, #Fox spilled the beans on two films being developed: The New Mutants, which we knew was going to be announced, but the other was a film titled X-Men: Supernova. This is obviously the seventh installment in the X-Men team films and hopefully the fourth featuring featuring the X-Men: First Class crew.
X-Men: Apocalypse was entertaining, but it a typical superhero disaster film with meaningless collateral damage caused by a meaningless third act. I was very hopeful about Apocalypse after the success of the previous two X-Men films being enjoyable, but Apocalypse fell short in the truly enjoyable department. Apocalypse felt like weakly made film by the studio, the writers and Bryan Singer. I'm glad Singer decided to leave the X-Men films to pursue smaller scale films and it's time the X-Men change their direction. Like a phoenix, the X-Men movies must rise from the ashes that were created by Apocalypse and rebirth into a new, better film franchise.
As a 19-year-old kid, I can't say I was around in the '80s to witness the greatness of Chris Claremont's X-Men comics, but part of my childhood was watching the amazing '90s X-Men animated series. The reason why I brought up that amazing cartoon is because it leads to my first thing the franchise needs:
1. A Nostalgic Score And A True '90s Aesthetic
As of late I haven't been blown away by superhero film score since maybe The Dark Knight Rises , The closes thing to a recent memorable score was Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice but the score didn't blow me away. Guardians Of The Galaxy had a amazing soundtrack as did Deadpool but I haven't got chills listening to any of these films scores. I want a film score that will get me as a excited as I was when I was 90's baby singing along to the X-Men theme song. I personally think they should remaster the sound of the old 90's show and make into the film. If they were to remaster it just using it in the marketing will sell a infinite amount of tickets before the film releases. People get excited when they hear the iconic Star Wars score , Harry Potter score , Indiana Jones score it's time like a phoenix resurrect a classic 90's theme.
X-Men: Apocalypse failed to capture the 80's like First Class captured the 60's and Days Of Futures Past captured the 70's. X-Men 7 needs to feel like a neon-bright trip to the 90's. Since the film is going to be set in the 90's it needs to feel like it with crazy fashion , haircuts , sound and feel.
I don't want to this film to feel like any of it's predecessors because I'm done with the look and feel of those films. I want see the X-Men have fun being mutants and not be so depressive/dry like the first three films felt like. I'm sure X-fans like myself are tired of the nods and hints that this franchise is going to feel more like a comic book rather than a typical action flick with black costumes...
Queue the next point.
2. Jim Lee Inspired 90's Costumes
The 90's comic book scene was dominated by everything X-Men and most of those iconic illustrations/designs were created by Jim Lee. Superhero movies are often afraid to let their actors & actresses don bright colored suits because they think it wouldn't look right but costumes are the most important about being a superhero. Bryan Singer is famous for implementing the bland black colored costumes in his films and its time for the mutants to change their wardrobe.Let me quickly take through memory lane to remind how terrible black spandex looks on a mutant.
The X-Men are known for their bright colored costumes that scream that their prideful of what and who they are. The X-Men suits need to embody the same amount of excitement when we wear our college colors , our favorite sport teams colors and how certain movements wave color in pride like the LGBT community.
No ones costume should look similar unless their a certain task force or on a team mission. It's key to have each character look different because each of their costumes embody something about each one of them. You should watch this video below created by a extremely gifted YouTuber Kaptainkristen to fully understand why costume and color are so important to the X-Men.
Who doesn't want to wear colorful tights while fighting bad guys. Magneto's favorite color is purple so even villains like vibrant colors.
3. Bring Back The Big Three No Matter What
Before I explain story wise why I wan't them back as I'm sure many others do , I would like to explain some recent news about J-Law's particular thoughts on returning.
I know not many people are fans of Jennifer Lawrence being the leading lady of these films but as a X-Men fan I don't mind because she brings people who wouldn't watch X-Men movies to see her in them. More recently said the only way she would reprise her role would be in a Guardians Of The Galaxy movie - won't happen. Her reasoning behind why she might not reprise her role as Mystique is a reasonable one by the way,She doesn't want to deal with the fumes and toxins that she smells after hours of make-up. I for one totally think this a legit reason and I think their is a solution. Change the look of the character to the comic version instead of the blue reptilian looking mutant.
Ditch the whole naked reptilian and just do CGI or a softer version of body paint. I think theirs a 50/50 chance she returns since I doubt she won't return if Fassbender decides to come back into the fray , James McAvoy is slated to return for New Mutants so we know McAvoy isn't truly tired of playing one of the most iconic characters in all of comics. Now I shall explain why bringing these three back in to the fold could be key to the story.
We need Magneto to tell Nightcrawler she's his mother and we need Quicksilver to tell Magneto he's his son. It would be a great way to emphasis that X-Men is a family oriented team and it could be a pair of great scenes. Imagine maybe Simon Kimberg as well of the rest of the writers have thought about killing off Mystique to end her arc and her dying words are to Nightcrawler that she's his mom. It would of course have to be built up to add weight to the scene so throughout the film Mystique should confess her fear to someone that the mission to space might be her most dangerous and last mission. For Quicksilver's announcement that he is Erik's son it should should be subtle , It should be cute and witty like the moment Quicksilver mentioned his mom knew a guy like Magneto. Of course we should possibly see Magneto tell the story of his daughter and wife death to the team somewhere in the middle of the movie to add emotional depth as well as see Quicksilver contemplate the reveal throughout like Mystique.
If Fassbender and Lawernce don't want to return after this film they could have a nice farewell with this message of family and I would rather see that then none at all. I'm pretty sure Lawernce and Fassbender want to return to being mutants in X-Men after one was a terrible passenger and the other a terrible assassin in their last two films.
4. Go To The Final Frontier-Space !
The movie should be set largely in space and it should introduce the Shi'ar and M'Kraan to truly set the story of the Dark Phoenix Saga in gear. The Shi'ar are human looking aliens who serve in this intergalactic council. The Shi'ar are much like Star Trek's Romulans. The talented comic book writer Ed Brubaker who's famous for creating the Winter Soldier said this about the Shi'ar
I would of course condense the story and not use the whole portion of the Hellfire Club instead I would focus it heavy the conflicts the Shi'ar have with the X-Men over the potential genocide Jean Grey can cause. The villain of this movie would of course be Dark Phoniex in the end but D'Ken the evil ruler of the Shi'ar empire should secretly cause the Phoniex to go berserk instead of Mastermind like it was in the comics. This would kick of the intergalactic devastation caused by the deteriorating psychological breakdown that Jean's mental state goes through in the story.
Not all the Shi'ar are mean and cold-hearted since the princess by the name Lilandra Neramani becomes romantically acquainted with Professor X. This should be displayed in the film and maybe she should be played by Rose Byrne to freak out Professor Xavier even more since she looks like Moira Mactaggert. You can't have a movie about the Dark Phoniex and not include the Shi'ar unless your X-Men: Last Stand which we all know how that turned out. The Brood should appear for a small fight scene and maybe Quicksilver could make a Alien joke -#fanservice.
The final battle in the third act should be of course set in the Blue Area Of The Moon against the Shi'ar Imperial Guard and the X-Men to decide the fate of the Phoniex. Imagine the same style of battle as the airport sequence in Captain America:Civil War but instead of the Avengers its alien against the X-Men wearing their iconic colorful costumes in space on the moon !
5. Get A Director With A Uncanny Vision
It's highly unlikely that Bryan Singer will return to direct the next X-Men film since he's working on adapting Jules Verne's classic story 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea into film form. A part of me wouldn't of minded Singer returning since he is a huge Trekkie who enjoys space sci-fi genre so he could of brought a nice visual look for the film. It's time to move on and to bring back Mathew Vaugh. Vaugh directed the X-Men: First Class and is currently filming The Kingsmen sequel. Mathew Vaugh would be the perfect person to direct the film and give the First Class films a proper send off. If Mathew Vaugh isn't intrested then I have a few other options.
Duncan Jones is a great young talent director who directed the Warcraft film which was adored by fans , directed a increcible sci-fi mystery called Moon which stars Sam Rockwell , he's currently in post production with a new film he's directing which is Netflix exclusive film titled Mute.
Joss Whedon is known amougst the superhero movie community for directing argualbly the Star War's New Hope of superhero films with The Avengers. He of course famous for his hit TV shows Firefly and Buffy but amougst comic book junkies like myself he's famous for his Astonishing X-Men comic. Joss Whedon might have dissapointed a few people with Avengers 2 but it was a movie filled with alot of great character scenes that screamed family and team values that the X-Men films need. Whedon could create the perfect X-Men with his knowledge of comics and how comic book movies work.
Lexi Alexander is a very talented director who directed great film about the Punisher that was deemed a failure by critics but what do they know. The film is titled Punisher: War Zone and is a comic book movie gem featuring Ray Steveson as Punisher and a whole bunch of crazy action. Alexander also directed epsidoes of two superhero shows in Arrow and Supergirl. She also expressed intrest in directing the upcoming Marvel Netflix show Ironfist but it looks like they didn't reach out to her. She is obviously a comic book fan and she is also known for advocacy for females in Hollywood. She could help bring spotlight to characters like Storm , Jubliee and Psylocke who were masively underused in the last film. She could also add some fighting choreography with her expertise of karate.
Francis Lawrence is the director of the last three Hunger Games films , I am Legend and another forgotten comic book movie gem Constantine featuring Keanu Reeves as John Constantine. Francis Lawrence could be a bargaining chip to get Jennifer Lawrence back on board as Mystique. Lawrence has experience with big budget studio films and they all been fun action packed movies. Lawernce isn't my first or second or third or even fourth pick but if he could get Jennifer Lawernce back it could be huge for the franchise.
6. The X-Men Are Team So Emphasize Family
I'm tired of these films not focusing on being a ensemble piece , time after time these films are focus on Wolverine , the relationship between Magneto and The Professor , Anna Paquin's awkward Rogue and J-Law uncharacteristic Mystique. The movie should give balanced screen time to everyone to allow every character to play a role in the film. I want to see Olivia Munn's Psylocke have more dialogue and more fighting scenes, I want to see Lana Condor shoot fireworks out of her hands like Jubliee in the comics , I want to see Nightcrawler swashbuckling aliens , Cyclops slowly developing into a leader and Evan Peter's Quicksilver needs to have a run on space listening to a 90's song . Beast should be the tech guy as well the muscle guy , Professor X should try to be a father figure to the struggling Jean , Jean should be the focus since she is dealing with the phoenix force. The mutants should recruit Magneto to join the battle and Magneto should confess that he is in need of a family after his recent loss. Mystique should play the role of a motherly leader to Jean , Storm , Jubliee and Psylocke but of course she's only doing it because she wants to be around her son- Nightcrawler.
The film should take a lot inspiration from films like Captain America:Civil War ,Guardians Of The Galaxy and Star Trek Beyond. All those films are fun and have a variety of characters that all get shared screen-time which allows everyone to get in fun. I envision the movie to be a giant intergalactic action drama that wraps up the story that started in First Class.
I think this shouldn't be a typical superhero movie with a huge disaster that doesn't amount to anything in the end of film. This movie should redefine the genre like Deadpool , Captain America: Civil War and Guardians Of The Galaxy did for the superhero genre. The Dark Phoenix saga is known for being the greatest X-Men story ever told and one of the greatest comic book stories ever written so it should be handled with extreme care in movie form.
I hope Fox gives gets this one right for us the fans and I hope we all enjoy Logan on March 3rd.
