There's no denying that Ian Somerhalder is hugely successful. Ever since he first stepped into the limelight as a young model in the late '80s and '90s, he's been turned heads right, left and center. All the more when he discovered his real calling as a serious actor in Hollywood.
Yet, as much as we've enjoyed his TV work and his long-running stint on The Vampire Diaries, we've always had a niggling thought as to why Ian Somerhalder never really made it on the big screen. After all, he did have numerous very promising runs in with movie projects in the early '00s and certainly caught our attention as Paul Denton in 2002's Rules of Attraction:
Alas, the movie Gods haven't been too kind to the actor and despite starring on TV in Young Americans, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Smallville, Tell Me You Love Me and Lost, he's failed to break out of the small screen.
Here are some potential reasons as to why we haven't seen Ian Somerhalder in movies in recent years:
1. Ian Somerhalder Has Been With The Vampire Diaries For Almost A Decade
From 2009, Ian Somerhalder's focus has been whole-heartedly on one thing — The CW's long-running show The Vampire Diaries. And ever since he stepped onto the set of Mystic Falls as Damon Salvatore, he's been experiencing a great deal of success thanks to millions of devoted show fans all over the world.
Ultimately, Ian Somerhalder has been playing to this tune for what is close to a decade, preventing him from sticking his fingers into other movie pies.

2. The Movie Audition Process Hasn't Been Kind To Ian
Needless to say, it's not like Ian Somerhalder hasn't tried to get involved in the movie world more. Over the last few years alone, our favorite vamp has been to castings for a number of high-profile projects. Among many others, Ian's name was notably thrown about for the role of Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey and Superman in Man of Steel (both ended up going to Jamie Dornan and Henry Cavill respectively.)
The pool of talented actors in Hollywood is enormous so it's common that even worthy actors like Ian Somerhalder don't bag the coveted roles. But hopefully his time is yet to come!
3. He's Got Other Things On His Plate
Perhaps most importantly however, while acting may be his career, Ian Somerhalder's real passion has always been in environmental conservation. In fact, he's so engaged in encouraging others to positively impact the planet that he's been solidly working with the Ian Somerhalder Foundation.
And most recently, as well as keeping all of the foundation's many projects afloat, he's been working with various marine biologists to further our knowledge about coastal systems and coral reefs. So much so in fact, that he joined forced with Julia Roberts, Harrison Ford, Kevin Spacey, Edward Norton, Penélope Cruz, Robert Redford and Ian Somerhalder in a short conservation documentary. Watch it below:
Quite frankly, with this many achievements under his belt, Ian Somerhalder probably doesn't even need a fast-paced movie career anyway!
