Congratulations, This Is Us fans, we survived the first season of one of the most emotional, yet compelling, shows in recent memory! The #TV series took us on a road full of twists and turns — and moments when we had to reach for an extra tissue box.
The intertwining storylines and exquisite cast had viewers begging for more, week after week, but we sadly reached the end of Season 1. But don't worry, it is never too early to speculate and think about what lies ahead. Here are a few burning questions I have for next season:
1. Will Jack And Rebecca's Marriage Survive?
It certainly has been a rocky road for Jack (#MiloVentimiglia) and Rebecca's (#MandyMoore) relationship the last few episodes of the series' freshman season. We know that in the future, Rebecca is with Jack's best friend, Miguel (Jon Huertas), but as viewers we assume this happens after Jack's death. Maybe their relationship was in such disrepair that it could not be saved?
Jack has always been a family man, so I can't see him give up on the marriage without a fight. Jack's speech and Rebecca's reaction at the end of the finale seemed hopeful, so that storyline will presumably take center stage next season.
2. Will We Get More Details About Jack's Time In Vietnam?
The finale also gave us a look into Jack's life pre-Rebecca. We already knew that he had a rough life at home because of his alcoholic father, but we learned that he was in Vietnam and has been working odd jobs to hopefully move out. While fixing Mrs. Peabody's car, she questions how he came back from the war in such good spirits, and he explains that he didn't have it as hard as some people because he was only a mechanic.
I can't imagine anyone having an easy time while fighting in the war, so is it possible we will get flashbacks of Jack in his twenties during the conflict? People carry events like that throughout their whole life, so he must have witnessed things that changed him forever.
3. What Happened To Jack's Friend Darryl?
We know that Miguel remained Jack's best friend for much of his adult life, but what happened to Darryl? Even though he only appeared in one episode, he seemed to have a close friendship with Jack in their twenties. Struggling about their financial issues, they revealed their dreams of opening up an auto body shop before (almost) participating in a heist to get Jack's money back. Hopefully the writers give us more information regarding Darryl and why he isn't present after Jack starts a family.
4. Is Rebecca Done With Singing?
If it was not evident before the finale, then I believe it is now clear that Rebecca's singing career is not meant to be. It makes perfect sense why she wanted to take a second chance at a career that she always dreamed about; her feeling of not being needed — with a husband who works late every night and three teenagers at home — gives her a respectable reason to re-explore a passion.
In just one episode, we witness her friends telling her that she needs more realistic life plans, a demo get rejected by a record label, her bandmate hit on her, thwarting any plans of the tour moving forward, and worst of all, her husband questioning her reasoning as a forty-something woman singing cover songs in bars.
If singing was her escape, the latter certainly tarnished it. It does look like Kate (Chrissy Metz) is planning on following in her mom's footsteps with a singing career, so that could be something to look forward to.
5. How Will Beth Respond To Randall's Interest In Adopting?
Next to Kate's decision, we learn of Randall's (Sterling K. Brown) life-changing idea that he shared with his wife, Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson): adopting a child. In what feels like coming full circle, being an adopted child himself, it seems like he has come to terms with his mother's decision to keep William out of the picture, and realizes how he still has a wonderful life with a loving family; getting to spend a short time with William was a bonus.
Even though Randall had to endure the grief of losing both his biological and adoptive father, he still understands how much more fulfilled his life was knowing them both. Quitting his soul-sucking job and coming to a new realization, it is no surprise he wants to share his family's love with a child in need, just as Jack and Rebecca did for him 36 years prior. As Beth has been one of the most logical and honest characters in the show, it will be interesting how she responds to Randall's request.
6. How And When Will Jack Die?
I am sure this is the most important question on the minds of viewers: how and when does Jack die? We know that the kids are teenagers and that Rebecca is still wearing the moon necklace; other than that, we do not have much to go on.
There have been many theories out there, often pointing towards his drinking, but maybe that was too obvious considering the twists the show throws out there. Does the fact that he is cremated mean anything or is that looking too much into it? And why does Kate take on so much guilt over his death?
Expect this question to carry over throughout Season 2 and possibly into Season 3, as the cast and creators feel no need to rush the story. I have even taken on the unpopular decision on why I believe the audience should wait to find out the details regarding Jack's death. Even if we don't get concrete answers, at least expect more clues next season. One thing is for certain: it will be a long six months without the Pearson family.
