Social media is the pits.

The first trailer for Thor: Ragnarok is finally upon us, and for the most part, fans are extremely excited about the upcoming film. A few nitpickers are criticizing the radical tone change from the previous Thor solo films, but the consensus is that it looks like a huge improvement. However, another controversy could get a little hairy for Marvel...

I'm talking, of course, about Thor’s armpits.

When Thor raises his fist in the trailer, he reveals a surprisingly smooth underarm region — and it really upset the interwebs.

In fact, this is the second superhero armpit controversy this year. The first involved DC's upcoming film Wonder Woman, and whether Gal Gadot's digitally shaven pits were antifeminist. The issue was that she comes from a race of Amazons who are the epitome of female empowerment, and therefore would not be accustomed to oppressive social norms such as shaven armpits.

This new pushback seems to clearly be in response to the controversy.

In a Bizarro World version of the Wonder Woman controversy, fans are arguing that Thor is a warrior with godlike power who's the personification of masculinity, so he should have the hairiest pits in all the land. Really.

You might ask, "How did we get here?" How did we go from having very few superhero films, to having so many that we argue over the length of the characters' armpit hair? Well, that’s an existential quandary for another day — however, the fact remains that people wanted a hairier Thor!

You can argue that Thor is merely following in the footsteps of great athletes, such as Olympian Michael Phelps. Some superheroes need to have shaven pits to complement their power sets and environments — for example, Jason Momoa's Aquaman needs to be hydrodynamic to reach peak speeds underwater. Okay, Thor isn’t going to a pool party, he’s fighting the Incredible Hulk, but who the hell are we to judge heroes' personal grooming habits so long as they keep the universe safe?

To be fair, Thor does have a bit of armpit hair, but perhaps he needs to trim a little due to the friction caused by flailing his arms about in numerous battles!

Either way, superhero armpit hair length is an important issue in our world, but fortunately will pluck us into another world when it hits theaters on November 3, 2017.
