is going to return as Jack Reacher. The actor will reprise his face-puncher badass action hero role, in an adaptation of another best-selling novel by .
As Deadline reports, Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions are moving ahead with the sequel to Jack Reacher. The new instalment is going to be based on Never Go Back, the 18th book in the Lee Child series, published in September.
According to Deadline, in the new story:
Reacher heads back to his old military base in Virginia to take a woman to dinner who is now the commanding officer. By the time he gets there, she has been arrested, and Reacher finds himself being charged with pummeling one guy and fathering a child with a woman. He can’t remember either transgression but gets to the bottom of it with cunning and sometimes brute force.
The original film's director is busy preparing the shooting of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation for the summer, but apparently he is both the actor's and the studio's top choice to helm the sequel. Paramount is still looking for a writer.
Considering the finances, it might be surprising that the studio has made up its mind about the sequel: the original film only had a moderately good reception in the US, gathering $218 million worldwide (with $57 million production costs). Seems like the modest success is good enough for Paramount to do it again; Jack Reacher 2 is now happening.
